A buddy of mine is going on a long vacation and is afraid somebody may break into his place and steal his coin collection. Since he lives in an RV deep in the woods, he may have a valid fear.
Anyway he asked if I’d hold on to them and asked if I’d like to review them to see if there’s anything interesting. I jumped at the chance.
Well he brought me a box with about 5 pounds of coinage. There were a few recent mint sets, a couple of incomplete penny and state quarter books and then a cigar box full. There were a number of Walkers, Franklins and ‘64 Kennedys. There were about 30 War nickels, dozens of Rosies, Mercs, and Washington’s with a few SLQs, Barbers along with a few Indian heads and hundreds of wheats.

sadly I found a few laminations and a probable no FG Kennedy but the remainder were nice but well circulated coins.

But as I was running the pennies through my magnifier I was shocked to see a strange penny, one I had never seen before. There was a bird appearing on the screen! It was an 1858 Flying Eagle cent.

my personal collection consists of coins I find while metal detecting and while I have coins as far back as 1598, a Flying Eagle is high on my bucket list.

I called my buddy to tell him what he has and he told me to keep it. Very generous but I’m insisting he keep it. He said when he returns we’ll “talk”.

Anyway just wondering how the members of this forum would grade this coin? 8360EEC7-B0A9-45AD-AC25-A6E03B810E6B.jpeg 7C2AC07F-ED50-4256-82CE-23312946F1FF.jpeg

I'd call that G4 details. It has a few marks. The striations on the reverse look like they could be planchet flaws due to lamination rather than damage, but the little henpecks on the obverse do look like minor damage.

Regardless, it's not a displeasing coin for all that, and Flyers are fun, and you have one now (if you let him give it to you), and the price was right! :)

Nope, not with full rims on both sides, I say. Even has denticles on the reverse. "Details" grade, sure, but G4 details, at the very least.

G-4 Large Letters. Just put it in with his coins and give them all back to him saying nothing. If at a later date he gives it to you take it with thanks and value your friendship.
