1953 penny different "s" location mint mark

Why would there be two different locations of the same year mint mark?
Is this an error at the mint?

not really an error. THere is a general area where to put the MM and because they were stamped by hand, there will be some variation.

 

Yep, that's what happened.

 

You could literally find over a hundred different locations as each die was stamped individually and there were well over 100 dies used through the course of the year.
