Gee... I guess my years of cc experience haven't taught me as much as I thought. Can someone explain how a coin from the 1860's get a Proof 68 designation? I didn't think they minted proof coins then.

They made proofs back then and some one (actually multiple someones) took great care to keep this one in pristine condition. 68 is high, but not unheard of.

That's very good insight. I agree PF68 is extremely difficult to come by and are essentially POP 1 coins for proof 1860's and 1870's. I can't afford moon money coins, but I love 1860-70's proofs so I stick with Proof 64-65 with halfway decent eye appeal (at least!). They're great value. When it gets to above Proof 65 the dollar signs can really start to get big, especially on rarer date and silver issues!

Hmmm. Very interesting. I guess I'm going to have to do a lot more reading before I start my 2 cent collection.

    Thanks for the information.

Feel free to ask any questions you like. Personally, I have a special affinity for the 2-cent and 3-cent (both) series and moreover I am especially fond of collecting early proofs (1860-1889) of which I have about 40 coins now.

You'll find a wealth of information on boards like these.
