Please post your coins that depict Rulers who met violent deaths.....murder/ KIA/ suicide I will start with Louis XVI who was decapitated on the guillotine in 1793
Sorry, should have included more info? AV Double Louis d'or 1786-N Montpelier Mint Louis XVI 1774-93 France/ bourbon Kings
When I read "decapitated on the guillotine" I thought of France 1st. Was there other countries that used the guillotine ???
Lots actually/ France used it last on a Tunisian child murderer in 1977. Their last public execution was in 1939. Probably way faster/ painless then the electric chair. Saudi Arabia still do it with a sword in public. The "axe" was not the best, some where not that good an aim, and had messy/ painfull results.
To get back to the original topic, here is a shilling of Charles I of England, executed at the end of the English Civil war:
... and this one a penny of Edward II - certainly murdered, though whether this was as a result of of a colorectal intrusion using a red-hot poker is up for debate:
Her own cousin had her decapitated, the evidence against her might not hold up in court today and Elizabeth had to "accidentally" sign the death warrant. Allegedly when she was executed, aka decapitated, her wig fell off and revealed her gray hair.
I think Elizabeth probably relished having her sent to the headsman/ she had hundreds of Roman Catholics "hanged/ drawn and quartered" By the way I love your gold coin! I do not have any of hers yet
Czar Nicholas II AV 5 Roubles He was ordered to be shot along with his whole Family by Sverdlov in 1918. The Reds where afraid that White factions where attempting to free them from Communist imprisonment. The thugs sent to do the deed, used bayonets to finish off their victims, they where bad shots.
I do believe "relished" would be a wee bit of a stretch - there were complications of course - Mary was her first cousin - but more importantly the heir apparent for the English throne was Mary's son James VI(I). James had no memory or even relationship with his mother. Curiously despite that, when she was executed in 1587 the Court of King James broke off diplomatic contacts with the English for a short period. It would be fascinating to research the "casket lettres" and determine if in fact they were in Mary's hand or that of another. The originals were "lost" a very long time ago - if they were to turn up it would/could answer the question of Mary's culpability in the Babbington plot. The research of Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary is just so very fascinating, the contrasts, the occasional similarities etc.
Here's George I of Greece who was assassinated. I think there was another Greek king who was killed as well after him but I don't have time to look now. I also know the Italian king around the early 1900s was assassinated I believe. This isn't my coin but I do have one.
James III of Scotland ruled from 1460 when his father was killed by an exploding cannon. He was killed by rebels at the Battle of Sachieburn in 1488. I'm looking for my James II groat's image.
AV 20 Pesos 1866 Mexico City Mint Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico He was overthrown, unjustly tried and sentenced to death by firing squad by Juarez.
Ooh ~ Henri III of France was stabbed to death by a fanatical Dominican friar Jacques Clement in 1589, and his father Henri II met a grisly end during a friendly joust.
