I have heard all there is to hear, I think on how banks get state quarters and new nickels. Some just get them when they get them because they say they canot order them. Others say that the people that deliver them have forms to fill out to order them. Others say they can have the bank order they but they have to pay extra for each roll. So far up until the OR. quarters my bank has received some of each except the new nickels. Can or will anyone out there enlighten me on how to get just one box of each of the new quarter and nickels as they come out. Thank you for any information you may have. dutc (hutch)
Hey Hutch....I think we know one another ;--) I was going to ask my banker friend today and she was busy....I hope to as soon as I see her next... Speedy
Best bet is go directly to the US Mint. www.usmint.gov Sometimes there are delays in shipping and you will pay more than face value but they are uncirculated and in good condition... You can also try some of the bigger retail stores like Walmart etc. they order direct from the Federal Reserve and so most of these are uncirculated condition and you can pick them up for face value just like the bank.. You can use the US mint if you want to get ripped off on shipping and on cost of the coins... They sell to the FED Banks for face so they should sell to us collectors for face too...but they don't! Speedy
Larger banks usually have these but are reluctant to bother with them. Make friends with the vault teller, open an account, or offer some money. It can be tough.
I'm going to let you guys in on a little banking secret (just don't tell my boss). When your bank tells you that they "can't" order State Quarters or the new nickels, what they're really mean is they won't order them. Most banks do not deal directly with the Federal Reserve. Rather, they deal with private companies, ie Brinks, AT, or a whole host of others. These companies deliver and pick up money along thier routes. Therefore, odds are that the money at your local bank didn't come from the Fed, but the Seven Eleven down the road. So, in order for the bank to get something from the Fed, the head teller has to fill out another form (perish the thought! A whole form!!). So, quite frankly, most of them simply couldn't be bothered to take the time. Where I work, however, corporate makes each branch order the new quarteres from the Fed to keep customers happy. So when my head teller sits down and fills out that form, I'll make sure she orders an extra box for me. Ah!! Sweet Revenge!!
