I have 3 star notes and they are in UNC condition and in a magazine price guide they are worth $200 a piece is that right or what?
if they are 2003 A Atlanta and star notes they would have to have been from sheets. they do book for about $120-125 in CU condition in GEM $140. they came from a print run of 320,000. hope that helps
please post images of the notes. As mentioned if they are from Atlanta, they were issued in sheets only. An image will give us a better look at the potential condition of the paper. RickieB
Why would a note that has a known population of approximately 320,000 survivors in CU (since none were issued for circulation) and a collector base of maybe a few thousand at most (how many people REALLY collect FRN $2 star notes by series and district?) have such a high catalog value?
Well, for one thing, these were the only stars printed for the entire 2003A $2 series, so even the folks who don't collect by district will need one. For another thing, where did "none were issued for circulation" come from? I think some folks are getting confused about what "printed for sheets" means. These stars weren't sold as uncut sheets; they were printed for circulation but used as replacement sheets, rather than replacement straps. (There are two separate inspections at the BEP where star notes are used. First, the sheets are inspected right after the serial numbers are printed but before they're cut, and defective sheets are replaced with sheets of stars. Then after the cutting-and-strapping operation, the straps are spot-checked again, and if a defective note is found, the whole strap is thrown out and replaced with a strap of stars.) The fact that the 2003A $2 F..* run was used as replacement sheets will tend to make it scarcer in CU condition. These notes will enter circulation sprinkled through straps of regular notes, rather than as full straps of stars that are easy for a cash-vault teller to spot and divert to the collector market. Additionally, most of these stars probably aren't in circulation yet at all. Many of them are sitting in the Fed, where they've still got enough new $2's in the vaults to last for several years (they've said that they don't need the BEP to print any more in either 2009 or 2010). And it's likely that many more are still sitting in the BEP, waiting to be used as replacements the next time $2's are printed (just as leftover 2003 $2 I..* straps were used as replacements during the 2003A printing, so that no 2003A $2 stars needed to be printed for replacement straps). They'll get out eventually, but collectors are a notoriously impatient bunch (see: former Ebay prices for 2009 cents), so for now the values are a bit unrealistically high. Thus, if you can sell them for anything near the catalog value, I'd suggest doing so. But I sure ain't paying that much....
Wow, thanks for an incredibly in-depth explanation of the situation! I was under the impression from the single word 'sheets' in the Schwartz-Lindquist book that these notes were sold only as 'sheets' to collectors, with none released to the Fed. Your information is greatly appreciated, and should certainly appear in all currency guidebooks.
I tried to sell them but it did not work out and I do not have a scanner or camera and I got a pack of 100 $2 bills and those were on the bottom of the pack from the BEP
I can't view page 2 as I get a server error, but if Numbers has not replied yet... I think you guys are confused (or at a minimum confusing). For 2003A, Star Notes for the Atlanta District were issued for circulation. I think you are seeing the word Sheets somewhere next to the 320,000 print run (Schwarz & Lindquist??). That would be in reference to the fact that these notes were not issued in full straps, but rather the BEP printed full sheets only, but as they discovered defects during printing at a stage where they would replace a sheet prior to cutting and strapping, they would substitute these sheets in at that point, but ultimately the sheet would be cut up by the BEP and shipped for circulation. As I also discovered, if the BEP needs to swap out a full strap, they are substituting series 1995 straps. Awhile ago, I found 2 of these in a bundle and don't remember if I posted images. But since so many asked for pics, I'll post images of the one I found today. I'd place it in EF condition as the corners were folded at some point. This note has been through the Federal REserve at least twice as I found it in a recirculated bundle.
