https://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-S-EIS...267469?hash=item2ae659be0d:g:7v8AAOSwiuFelcfb This is nearly 400% more than the market price for an untoned coin, and I would think in a decade that coin might get quite ugly.
I know I pay more if I really like the tone. A couple times I have paid much over book....not sure about 400% however. I also don't have any interest in anything that even might be artificially toned. If I even suspect artificial.... I run.
Toning became popular 5-10(?) years ago. People thought colorful toning was "appealing". It caught on and now they cost more than for coins with normal gray toning. But I don't think there is any catalog-type listing for them. Value is simply a function of what the seller wants vs. what a buyer will pay. If you want to see something REALLY ridiculous wait until someone develops color grading I personally don't care much for colorful toning. I'll save money by buying coins with normal gray toning. But at one time I thought (and still do) that the pastel coloring on some nickels was appealing. I read somewhere that it was mostly on the silver war nickels because of the small amount of manganese used. But I never attempted to collect them.
I guess I should distinguish my opinion on toning. I think there's 2 types. 1. Grey black brown patina created soley from age and environment. I will make decisions over book for this toning. I will fall for this type to fault. I also like BU on world coins only as well. On US stuff I rarely buy BU. 2. Rainbow. I run. In my opinion it is all manipulation. I consider these damaged.
Certainly. I was only expressing my opinion. If someone enjoys rainbow or color toning as much as I like what I like?? Then go for it! I'm not judging just expressing my opinion as a buyer re: 400% premium.
Right, but if your artifically manipulating the coin, that would smell as fraud, I would think. Regardless, would toning values of this kind of coin likely to hold up over time or are these just gullible bidders on ebay?
Red and Brown. Your right. We pay premiums on that. Especially red. I will pay a premium for red or red brown.
I'm not sure it's fraud unless you lie and say it's natural. There's a whole world of collectors that buy rainbow and love it...they gotta know it's smoke and mirrors.
It's a Gen 15 holder, last made in 2015 or nearly 6 years ago. I don't think it will change color much more. I'm not a big Ike guy but I think the coin has eye appeal, and NGC doesn't give out stars. $225 is really steep but who knows, someone might like it at that price.
That is a valid thought, but maybe you can only stretch that idea so far. I don't think this coin is artifical toning, fwiw and as a different issue.
I for one will never fully understand high-end modern collectors, but it does no good to ignore that there is a large base with lots of money. Even if they can buy MS bust coins with that money, it doesn't matter if they aren't interested in it. Morgan owners can be just as silly too, see the moon money that gets spent on some toned silver dollars. It helps to remember that this is, first and foremost, a hobby, and one of few that holds at least some of its value. Buying a $225 Ike may be better in someone's eyes than buying a sports car and driving tens of thousands off its value as soon as it leaves the dealership. (Not a dig on car guys, I would too if I could afford it)
Not to mention people should be happy collectors like that exist. If everyone liked the same things and there wasn’t a wide variety of interests only the ultra rich would be able to afford the series everyone wants
