Last one for tonight (need to get the kids to bed soon so that I can watch Coming to America 2!). Any advice on grade and value would be appreciated. Thank you in advance, James
I would say VG10 details, personally, to be conservative, but right on the cusp of F12, so I wouldn't quibble with @thomas mozzillo's assessment much. It's pretty close. The small scratches on Liberty's throat might make it a "details" graded coin if it were submitted for professional grading (I wouldn't bother), but as problems go, I don't think that's too heinous. It probably had an old cleaning at one point but that is par for the course for a lot of these, and this one has retoned acceptably in my opinion. As to value, Numismedia puts a common die variety, problem-free 1834 at $68 in VG8 and $81 in F12, from a general retail standpoint. Realistically, I'd put it around $50-65 as-is, unless it turns out to be a scarcer Overton variety. (You'll need a specialist opinion on that- I'm out of my depth there.) Hey, it's a Bust half, after all. They're all nice to have, regardless of the grade. And while not perfect, this one ain't bad, either.
I'd call it a F-12 but it does also look cleaned to me. It's a Large date, Large Letter variety and it looks to be O-103 which is a common one. $50 coin in my opinion.
