Why is this? Is there a reason? To make it look nice? That stinks. So its worth a quarter then? My first plated coin found thats why I'm asking so many questions
All you have is more fuel for the local Coinstar machine. Outlets such as HSN and the Bradford Exchange put out manufactured collectibles such as these at the height of the 50-State Quarters program.
When the state quarters were introduced, the TV hucksters rushed to get as many high grades from the TPG's as possible. Of course, many of those submitted did not make the grade, so they came up with the idea of plating many in very, very, very, very thin layers of either silver, gold or platinum and selling sets of each state in fancy wood display cases at extremely inflated prices. Many suckers.......I mean investors.......I mean buyers.......bought into THE BIG LIE, but when they learned that the precious metals added nada......zilch......zero......to the value, they ended up dumping a lot of the coins back into circulation.
You will find most Denver quarters to be of a much higher quality and many have an almost proof like quality to them if you find them early on.
