Haven't found any reliable info on that yet myself. Looking at the sellers pics, the only thing sharp and clear is that R. The original must have a very clear R on it and the reproduction picked up on that better than any other details is my guess.
They are right toad your link does not work, but it doesn't matter now the auction is over and they sold that poor quality, marked replica for just over $90. By the way, I lost that Middlesex 1166bis AGAIN. Sniped it at six seconds, and got sniped at three seconds.
Here's another misattributed 1804: http://cgi.ebay.com/1804-DRAPED-BUST-LARGE-CENT-DAMAGED-4-S-266-B1_W0QQitemZ110423460449 Compare the reverses: http://www.largecents.net/collection/coinpics/s266c.jpg Here"s what I told the seller: "The stems are wrong, the leaf tips are in the wrong spots (look at leaf tips at the A & M of AMERICA) and the berries are wrong." BTW - Tom Deck says that one is a 1807 S-276 and I informed the seller of such but they went ahead with the sale. :goof: This is one seller I will avoid! He just ripped someone off, knowingly!!!! Now I have to wait for feedback to be left, so I can find out who it was, then I'll message them to let them know what they bought. Ribbit
Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was 275 or 276, I have to use the distance from the head to LIBERTY to tell those two apart and with the steeply angled photos it was impossible to judge it accurately.
Not only did they rip them off, but no returns on this item. I will certainly avoid this seller also. Mark
The seller put my first message in the Q&A but didn't "publish" my second message, that explained it was a S-276. :goof: The correct way to have handled this, other than getting it right the first time, would have been to end the auction and relist it properly and the price at the time I first messaged him, was above what it was worth so he out-right scammed the bidders. Situations like this really get my toad and pee's me off. :hammer: Ribbit
Here's a good one: http://cgi.ebay.com/u-s-a-cent-1800-has-tempted-drill-mark-to-date_W0QQitemZ260468139169 Seller has it listed as a 1800 and it's actually a 1802 S-228. :goof: Ribbit
