The last coins I posted (#6) were 5-cent coins (nickels) in copper-nickel. Unless you are REALLY into Shield or Liberty V nickels they don't get a lot respect. Their designs are a bit mundane to me. But prior to CuNi nickels the Mint was striking coins of 5-cent face value in silver and labeled "Half Dimes". (Actually the production of Shield nickels and Seated Liberty half dimes overlapped for 8 years, 1866 to 1873.) Off the top of my head this and dollars are the only coins of the same face value to be struck in two distinctly different metals. Yes, I'm ignoring alloys like in the early IHCs. Plus half dimes were struck into the Liberty Seated or Seated Liberty design era (your choice of descriptor). This, like most of the rest of the SL series, resulted in a number of major varieties. In the case of the half dime the varieties totaled five. Anyway, here's some of mine:
That is my favorite as well! I guess the Designer(s) never considered whether the Eagle could fly with such a big head and carrying a Shield on it's chest. Nice Set Kanga! Thanks for sharing! Frank
It's nice to see the various types in sequence. I'm partial to the bust and 'no stars' designs myself. It's especially hard to find seated HD examples that haven't been fiddled with. Thanks for sharing those, excellent photos too!
A very nice and appealing set of half dimes. All obviously carefully selected. I tend to favor the capped type as well, but the Seated issues have their appeal too. Congratulations Kanga!
Nice set. I always liked the half dimes. I must admit though, they are small enough that sometimes they are better admired in photos like your's. :thumb:
