I agree, the price is too high for me, I don't think it's worth the investment

the mint should lower two or one bracket on its gold price chart.

I took Elaine's advice and got into the Spouse series a couple of months ago. It took a little eBay work, but I filled the holes. I got Martha Washington and Abigail Adams at just under $500 each (Unc & Proof)...way less than I expected.

I don't suspect the series will end early. Rising gold prices and a sluggish economy may be the "perfect storm" for this series. The most "complete sets" possible is currently 4223. Anna Harrison or the Tyler harem may drop that number even lower.

Granted, these are bullion coins and not true commemoratives...but they're really a bit of a hybrid. Looking back at the Modern Commemorative gold pieces (any denomination...ms67 or pr67), these coins sell pretty much at bullion prices until the mintages dip below 30,000.

From there, prices rise rather significantly as the mintages fall. Over time, I'm guessing the numismatic value of the Spouse coins will make up for the Mint's premium and any loss due to a contracting gold market...personal opinion (I've been wrong before). At least I'm putting my money where my mouth is.

I think there are maybe two ways this series could trade, one is by the nature of it as a long series of coins where the lowest mintage appreciates the most and the highest mintage is not worth more than melt value.

There is also the chance that the coins appreciate [by appreciate I mean the premium over the spot price of gold] based on individual appearance, some coins being disliked so are worth less than the ones that are attractive.

My guess is the coins actually do both, and that is why the series is confusing. They lumped in 4 Liberty coins plus a political coin, Alice Paul, and many of the spouses are unknown. It will be interesting to see how they sell in later years but at $1000 gold I don't see these going hot anytime soon.

ways that the spouses will be moving and selling like hotcake.

    1. the mint should lower its gold price chart. one or two brackets. the later is much needed.
    2. the mint should not limit its mintage. after all the 20,000 maximum is hard to break it.
    3. the mint should offer bulk order discount to individual buyers.
    4. other way that the spouse will be hot. the gold price must drop below $850.00.
    5. the gold price is 90% sure and predicted to jump more than $1,100.00 per ounce. and the today's price is still quoted at $945.00. then collectors will jump to buy them.

They probably will if the orders keep dropping.

Can you imagine if this were 1997 and we were discussing whether or not to buy the Jackie Robinson $5 Unc gold coin?

I think the thing is these are half ounce gold coins and most commemorative gold is 1/4 ounce. That may not seem like much however if you look at gold eagles there is a difference in the way the coins go for premiums.

Fewer people can collect 1/2 ounce gold vs 1/4 ounce.

That being said I am not saying to avoid these coins, only to not expect the prices to jump this year or next year is all. Historically the numbers are low and some time in the future they will do well, at least some of them will.

I noticed on the Louisa Adams coin I ordered that the striking in not very high relief, it was the opposite, so low relief it was barely a strike at least on the obverse.

For the price they charge they should have put more effort into better relief on these coins. Not all of them are that bad but it is inconsistent is all. The reverse are nice I must say, however people don't buy only for the reverses.

This coin series is 39 coins and so far only 6 have ended sales. So we have many years left to see what happens anyway, Lol.

If gold prices keep rising then the premiums will start dropping and sales will crash.

mostly likely. few years from now. all the spouses will be over $1,000.00 each. then we will enjoy it.

And those of us with complete proof and unc sets will enjoy it a little bit more! ;)

Just wondering why you are thinking the spouse coins will be worth $1000 each?

Because gold will be over $2000 per ounce??? If so, the spouse coins will likely cost $1300 a piece so I won't be happy they are only worth $1000.

But if it is because the numismatic value of the coins has increased to $1000 each, then sure, I'd probably be ok with that ;)

It took a while, but someone eventually put up a BIN of $679 for an Unc Monroe...and I jumped on it...I needed it! I think you'll see something special with this series once it's done (2015, I think). I'm often wrong, but I don't think I am in this case...we'll see!

There may be a number of sub-series that come out of this...

    Liberties
    Democrates
    Rebublicans
    Whigs
    Proofs, only
    Uncs, only
    19th century
    20th century
    Pre-Civil War
    Post Civil War/Pre WWI
    WWI-WWII
    Post WWII
    Post WWIII (j/k)

    ...who knows?

These low mintages can't be bad in the long run.

I think it's a good play for someone who is buying gold anyways... i mean I'd rather be buying these than the boring Eagles (and I am buying them).

In the long run, worst case is that they'll be worth gold melt value :)

...and I would encourage everyone to melt theirs down! :D
