As I said, Quarter-Siliquae of Gundobad are ultra-rare. I only know of 3 exemplars, one of which is in the Berlin Coin Cabinet in Germany. I guess not more than 5 or so of these coins have survived. This one I bought in a CFG-Auction in France some 15 years ago.

Great coin, I don't doubt that it was minted under Priscus Attalus, but how do you attribute the coin, given that the legend is illegible. Is it the reverse?

    Thanks
    Dirk

Thanks Dirk, yes, the reverse is the clue, in hand one can read VICTO[RIA ROMA]NORVM, the star in upper left field, and officinae mark retrograde OF Q (RIC X #1415). In the obverse one can read only PR[ISCV]S.... IMG-20170131-WA0028.jpg IMG-20170131-WA0029.jpg

That is a great find! I have no hope of ever owning a coin of Priscus Attalus, even though it would fit nicely to the historical context that I'm interested in.

Here is my favourite coin of Odovacar from my collection. It is a Tremissis, minted in Rome or Ravenna. I like this coin because of the portrait. This should be Zeno of course, but it really looks like a portrait of Odovacar with the moustache, which he is depicted with on his famous Quarter-Siliquae. I think this resemblance is not accidental.

Beautifull!! By style looks Ravenna. Moustache is quite clear!

Fortunatelly I have nummus from Ravenna, with Odovacars monogram, portrait style is similar, but I cant see the moustache on this

As a reminder of how Odovacar is depicted on his Quarter-Siliquae. Needless to say that these coins are in public collections. The first coin (only avers) is in the British Museum I think, the second is in the Berlin Münzkabinett in Germany. It is clear from the diadem, that the bust on my Tremissis was meant to be the Emperor Zeno, but I think the physical resemblance to Odovacar is striking and no accidental.

This is a great coin. The VAC of ODO-VAC is legible and the monogram is that of Odovacar (compare to the Quarter-Siliqua above). If you are ever planning on selling it .... I know ... no chance.

Im not sure, but the obverse of my Odovacar/Theoderic nummus, seems to show bust with moustache too, what do you think?

Yes, it certainly looks like a moustache.

I know it is attractive to attribute this coin to Odovacar rather than Theoderic. I'm not a hundert percent sure that it is not Odovacar. However, I think the monogram is much closer to that of Theoderic than to that usually used by Odovacar. Since both, Odovacar and Theoderic minted in the name of Zeno some coins will never be attributed with certainty to one of the two rulers.

I think this coin is best ascribed to these very interesting transitional years, when Odovacar was besieged by Theoderic in Ravenna, or just after the murder of Odovacar by Theoderic.

(I would love to have this coin :))
