My whole collection is a giant impulse buy. Which is why I enjoy these threads so much.

Speaking of Lucilla, below is a batch of three sestertii that went for a blistering $36.09 on eBay. The Hadrian and the Pius were what I was going for - that bottom one is a Lucilla. In addition to its awful pitting, the rims on the Lucilla have been ground down and are smooth and shiny - once part of an ugly brooch perhaps? I am pretty sure that is Hilaritas on the reverse, RIC III 1740 (Aurelius). At least I think it is a sestertius - it looks undersized compared to the other two, but it weighs 17.5 grams, too heavy for a dupondius I'm guessing.

The Lucilla is pretty awful, but I was quite happy with the other two (I don't think the green on the Pius is BD - it is hard, not powdery).

That is a very nice score. I have seen that Hadrian go for twice what you paid for the lot. And not as nice as that one. And I 100% agree about collection being all impulse. Lol That's why mine is all over the place.
    Ty for sharing

My HILARITAS sestertius of Lucilla is a smoothie, too. Its provenance information was lost in a computer crash in 2008. It weighs 24.48 g.

Thanks Donna! It is indeed an unpatinated Sestertius :)

So I am going to add to this thread from time to time. I think its a fun subject and I tend to do a lot of under 50 impulse buys when I am bored.
The latest that arrived today came from my favorite casino: ebay. But, it did come from my most trusted seller. And for a no real thinking buy I really like the over all look. Price was a tad more then I liked at the end of the bidding $46.00 with shipping but once in hand I feel another success.
Please feel free to comment and show what your impulse has scored you.
Heres what mine got this time.

So this week we have, a lot of 3 from ebay marked as a estate sale. When I first started out I fell for some cast repos from a estate sale and have been a little scarred since and tend to avoid them.
This week was different, I thought I would try my luck again. The lot of 3 cost me 19.99 with shipping and turned out to be a 2 out 3 success.
First I will get the dud out of the way. It was very obvious this was a cast copy but I was willing to take the junk if it came with some treasure.
Its a Tiberius tribute Penny cast copy.

Now the second starts to make things better. It looks way better in hand then in their pics listing the items.

    PicsArt_03-18-04.11.34.jpg

Claudius II Gothicus, Billon Antoninanus, 268-69AD 20mm, 3.8g, Antioch
    Obv: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG
    Radiate head left
    Rev: AQVITAS AVG
Aquitas standing left, holding scales and scepter.
    Ref: RIC 197 Sears 11316 C6

This last one is what caught my eye and had me bid. And I am very happy about.

    PicsArt_03-18-04.12.33.jpg

Herennius Etruscus, AR Denarius, 251AD, 21.5mm, 4.0g, Rome
Obv: Q HER ETR MES DECIVS NOB C
    Radiate draped bust right
    Rev: PIETAS AVGG
Mercury standing left, holding purse and caduceus.
    Ref: RIC 142b RSC 11 Sears 9520

Needs a little love but overall a very nice ant. I think at 19.99 even with the terrible cast repo it is another successful week.
As always please share any of your under $50 buys, and thank you in advance for any comments or opinions. Happy hunting.

Fascinating thread ! I bought the following coin for 14 dollars. I was only interested in the reverse depicting Fortuna holding something strange with her left hand. Her right hand, as usual, on a rudder. Nike is also there on a column. The obverse has the bare head -left of an Emperor that I guessed was Caracalla. But @Zebucatt posted a nearly similar bust on page one1 of this thread under the name of Diadumenian. Hope he's right.

    I consider this a bargain.
    upload_2021-3-19_0-5-50.png

    Diobol AR 10 mm., 1,04 g.
Klazomenai, Ionia, AR diobol. 499-494 BC. Forepart of winged boar right / Quatripartite incuse square. BMC 14; SNG von Aulock 1983; SNG Copenhagen 6-8; Sear 3503

It was pure impulse - saw it and liked it, it wasn't in my plans. There was a similar coin in that auction, but slightly better centered (the boar's head was fully visible, but the wings were not). Hammer for that one - 90 EUR. Hammer for mine - 18. I think you can't go much better than that.

That is a terrific buy - the Herennius Etruscus alone is worth it. This is exactly the kind of lot I like buying on eBay - and I have bought some with obvious fakes, so long as there is some good stuff in there as well.

    Nice catch!

Just arrived from eBay - $9.99 plus $0.85 postage (sent First Class). It was described as a Jovian, but I was pretty sure it was Julian II the Apostate - more than I usually pay for an LRB, but it was an impulse. I couldn't help myself!
