I need your help, friends! Does anyone of you own or have access to this fixed price list of the Belgian company Ch. Dupriez (published 07.04.1913)? "Collections de feu M. van de Vyvere, d'un amateur du nord de la France, Catalogue No112bis, monnaies, médailles, jetons et méreaux" According to Banti, this Sestertius from the Collection of Richard van de Vyvere (1837-1912) should be somewhere in there...
A copy was sold at Jacquier’s as nr. 1174 in the auction of September 15, 2017. Probably they won’t tell you who bought it, but maybe they’ll consent passing a message.
I only found one copy in a library through WorldCat - here is the BnF Catalogue Entry I've always found librarians quite helpful and if a librarian can confirm the Sestertius is in there you should be able to purchase a scan of the page.
@Julius Germanicus - I know that this is an older thread, but I actually just purchased a copy of this catalog - I am awaiting it in the post, but will let you know what I find / send along a scan of the page.
Coincidentally, I look for that catalogue off and on too, as a coin of mine was in that sale too and I also found it in Banti - in a red RR volume. Small world (I was sent a photo' of the relevant page a few years back, but it would be nice to have the dead tree edition on a shelf). ATB, Aidan.
I've only got Red and Green ones The Republican Corpus Nummorum Romanorum volumes are red and the the Imperial ones green, but I guess you've got the I Grandi Bronzi Imperiali. Colourful books! ATB, Aidan.
Yes, those are the only ones I have. Do you happen to know any biographical data or other info about the author himself? I cannot find anything online but maybe there is something written in your books. I Grandi Bronzi Imperiali looks very much like a self-published work (I doubt that many were sold), and for whatever reason Volume I (the 12 Caesars) was never completed.
Ok, so it arrived today, and it would seem that the coin appeared as lot 1527 of the Van de Vyvre (lower right of the plate), attributed to Gordian I, and priced at 70fr. Hope this helps!
Thank you very much! The same picture is in Banti. It is of course Gordian II and not I (the obverse die was exclusively used for this reverse type of Junior).
That is why I specifically mentioned the attribution to 'Pere' (father, the elder)... it is not often that Dupriez got things wrong - I found it rather surprising.
