Yesterday I looked at a nice condition (I'm still a baby at this grading thing) 185x Coronet Large Cent at a local coin show. The dealer is a guy I like & trust who said it was not an ex-jewelry piece but that it just had a "bump" on this side of the coin (One place only & it was not at the 12 o'clock) Does this sound right?? No pics available as I did not buy it. It was priced low & looked nice w/good patina. I may buy it next month. All advice appreciated. Thanks, Bill.
Edge bumps are common, especially on old coppers. Just drop one on a hard surface and you will get the dreaded edge bump. If severe, the coin won't grade at a major surface. Just think of it as a fairly heavy scratch, and value accordingly.
Yes as Majorbigtime mentioned rim bumps are easy to acquire. The 1850's braided hair large cents are quite common(1857 the exception) in my opinion and unless this one was really cheap I would skip it. You can can get decent problem free 1850's coins in the 30 to 60 dollar range. It is really hard to say without seeing the coin and knowing the price.
