I'm pretty sure it's authentic. I took it to one of the local coin dealers (the only one who submits to TPGs) and he felt that it was authentic. Both this coin and my double eagle came from my grandma and I wanted to have them slabbed to protect them as they are worth more to me than they are to any other collector. I submitted both to PCGS using that dealer. I know this coin will only come back in a genuine slab...but that's all I care about. That is why I was wondering what the details grade would be as they won't slab it with a grade.
that's good to know. I don't see anything to indicate it's fake, but i get nervous when I see these raw due to the fact that the fakes outnumber the genuine pieces. Personally, I would never purchase one of these raw, but the fact that you received it from your grandma is a completely different story! Congratulations btw, and enjoy your coin. Even if it is damaged, these coins are hard to find, and this one especially holds a lot of sentimental value based on where you received it.
I believe the coins were redesigned because the type 2's didn't strike up well. Not really sure though....
Yes, the Type II was redesigned because of the striking issues. This is quite easily observed on all the Type II's pictured in this thread - note the weakness in the hair and leaves especially.
So, I got the coin back today and it did slab as "Genuine." The code they gave for it being ungradable was 98 which is just "Damage." I knew it wouldn't grade and I am very happy to have it in a genuine slab.
Glad it turned out to be the real thing. Plus, it will be hard to lose in that slab. Those things are TINY!
Mine is damaged as well. Mine might be over graded, I saw a AU detail from same year and mint that seem to be better than mine.
