    Howdy peeps, :D

    I finally acquired a decent example of a 1775 4-75A Machin's Mills counterfeit. :D

I'm curious? How can you tell this is a counterfeit?

Don't have any to add to the thread, real or otherwise. :(

Machin's Mills made English half-pennies are all counterfeits, since they were not made under the King's authority. ;) So they are contemporary counterfeits (also known as imitations). :D

Here's a great place to read up on these:

And, of course, if you really want a great read, pick up a copy of Will Nipper's "In Yankee Doodle's Pocket" and enjoy! :thumb:

Good reading. No coin to add to the thread, but based off the reading material provided that looks like a fake -triangle denticles, pursed lips. Nice coin toad.

Just so no one gets the wrong idea, what Mark meant by "looks like a fake" is it's a fake English half-penny, which it is. :D The English counterfeits are an up and coming series and a lot of peeps (Americans) collect these, even if they aren't of US origins. The Blacksmith's are another interesting series and also in high demand. :pencil:

What do you mean "aren't of US origins" ? The design maybe, according to what I was reading they were "minted" in NY. Sounds like "Made in the good ol' US of A". :)

Machin's Mills imitation half-pences are of US origin but only make up a very small percentage of counterfeit English coppers. Blacksmiths are of Canadian origin:

Then there are all the ones that are from the UK. ;)

Most US collectors only collect the US and Canadian counterfeits but I collect them all, if they appeal to me. ;)

I met a fascinating guy at ANA who is doing independent research on Machin's Mills coppers. He has original source literature and is wading through it all.

  10. Very cool...Something from Machin's Mills is high on my wanted list, as it was basically right across the Hudson River for me!
