Interesting, and I almost missed these! Must've come from San Francisco mint sets I would assume? The 2017 is maybe the enhanced version. I just wonder with these. Unlike proofs I'd think people break them out more often and throw them into circulation when they need change badly.
Hard to tell based on the pictures provided. I actually find quite a few business strike san fran quarters. Not sure why.
I'm certain you know the difference. I haven't heard of that. Were there San Fran mint sets? I don't buy Mint Sets...so it's a surprise to me either way.
San Fran started minting "business strike" quarters in 2012. They were only sold by the mint in either rolls or bags. So any of the ones you find in the wild were from those. Most of them are pretty low mintage. Sub 2 million.
It's possible (likely?) some folks bought rolls from the mint, cherry picked the best to try to get an MS-70 slab, then released the rest into the wild.
Yeah, not my area of expertise either but people do it. Depends on what an MS-70 clad fetches on eBay I suppose....
I have found some S minted quarters roll hunting. Both proof and business strike. Both are fun to find ( I have a thing for S minted coins). I buy a roll of S mint quarters (business) from the mint every year. I have always kept them intact. Don't know why, but I do. Maybe down the road with the low mintages they may be worth something.
Looks like they might have a higher level finish. But good to know that they are out there and apply all the way back to 2012. I have been looking for W coins for the last couple of years, but if it's older I tend to end with the date and ignore the MM. I will have to change that gear!! Thanks for the tip!!
