Kids today have too many other distractions to focus on coin collecting, which to many is "lame." When I was a kid, it was a big deal to find a coin from England or China. Now, my kids and grandkids look at my "pocket change" from international travels with complete disinterest. Even the thrill of owning a rare error coin or low-mintage coin has disappeared with the new generations. Auction buyers with deep pockets have driven up prices so that ordinary collectors are often shut out. The presidential dollars and state quarters program may create a few long-term collectors but the parents and grandparents are doing most of the buying (as I am doing for my grandkids).
The one thing I find sad, is that kids my age aren't acclimated with coins at all, they think the presidential dollars are the rarest things in the world (And not too many people know what they are though) IMO, state quarters, were fun, and brought a little smile on my face when I got one, but I call them crap. As I do with presidential dollars, and the majority of the young collectors are just exposed to what I call crap. I guarantee we could spark more collectors, if they were exposed to the most beautiful coins, ever made. But you know collectors will continue to come into this hobby, it is inevitable, and we don't have anything to worry about. Collections will be passed down, grandparents will show their coins to their grandkids, it will all be okay. This hobby, makes the most sense out of any hobbies, in which you are spending money, IMO.
T$..all that trash talk about moderns. Remember, folks (kids) gotta start somewhere. Ouch...I'm just a "modern" guy....:smile
LOL! You know how I feel about them moderns.... (Excluding the wonderful bullion products, that get SHIPPED FAST by our US MINT every year LOL)
Yo T$ that's called life and you'll be just fine dude. First take care of your health but I don't think you need anyone to tell you that. Popularity may seem important now but it really does tend to even out as the years pass. I spent my 20th High School Reunion basically BSing with a guy that collects GI Joe stuff. Had anyone predicted that when we were in school I would have said "yeah right". I was "cool" he was not. Heck of a nice guy actually. Wasn't like I knew a lot of YN collectors when I was your age. I belonged to a club. Four of us were YNs. One was the best man at my wedding. He no longer collects and I have no clue where the others ended up. I did the "kid growing up thing". Girls, peer pressure then early adulthood. One day I came back to coins. It was in my blood and I'm the only family member that ever had it in me. YNs are out there believe me. Sure the modern "crap" has lured them in but it's the same with adults. Someone that has never been to a coin shop tends to look around. Some of those people get "bit by the bug" - young or old. Yesterday I had a guy come in that wanted to upgrade his Kennedy halves. It was a circulated collection but the "bug" bit him. I spent a lot of time with him to upgrade. Also taught him a few things. He was grateful and will be back. Later I had a kid of about 10 in with his mom. Tougher case (for me anyway). Going through the World paper AND coin "bargain" bins. Not my strong point. I spent over an hour with them and sold $5 worth of stuff. The kid's got it in his blood. Luckily I had the time to spend with him for this. He'll be back as well - just hope I'm not real busy. The bottom line here is there are still probably just as many YNs out there. I know I've talked about the advantages they have with the internet in the past but sometimes just talking to an old dog like myelf keeps them "focused". It really is in your blood and nobody knows where those genes come from. YNs are out there in strong numbers. Numismatics is not a dying hobby.
Well lets just hope we can inspire all those YN's to be the best collectors they can be, and hopefully they can inspire somebody else to collect and so on.
Hm....I kinda found a way to balance girls, coins, school, friends...(Just not telling any of them about the other) lol
Travis.....ease up on those negative opinions.... The state quarters were wildly successful and introduced coin collecting to thousands or tens of thousands of people. It helped get you going right? Many of those coins are quite attractive too. JMHO.
I am going to try to get my daughter interested, but I am not going to force anything. She is only 2 now and all coins are "pennies" to her.
Collecting coins (or anything for that matter) is very personal indeed. A true collector 'hits" on things that stike his fancy...not what others deem is "correct". Let's take a for instance....I like to collect proof & mint sets. There are many who would say that I'm wasting my time: that worthless junk ain't ever going to appreciate down the road. Know what? I don't care. If I had to worry about everything that I added to my collection increasing in value in the years to come I'd surely go out of my mind. I collect what I like. I would also encourage others to do the same. There is no right way or wrong way to build a collection. The whole point of collecting is to have fun. The hobby is alive and well (as I stated earlier in this thread) as evidenced by the many knowledgeable YN's on this forum. They are passionate and dedicated to the hobby but they should remember one thing.....you gotta start somewhere, and there ain't no right or wrong way to collect....oh, sorry, that's two things.
