I got 8 Uncirculated-looking 1971-D Kennedy Half dollars and figured they were about worth 1.50 a peice but recently purchased the book "Strike it rich with pocket change" and saw the 1971-D silver clad mistake and what its worth. Though i am realistic and know the chances are slim to none but...just in case my few questions are: A) Does it weighing 11.5 Grams a GUARENTEE its authentic B) what is the sure test to prove it (the Tissue-Overlay?) C) Does anybody know how many were actually struck
None of your halves are 40% silver. I mean, do any look like 40% silver? Don't they all look like CuNi clad? And as to their worth, I'd say $1.50 each is about $1 too much.
My suggestion, stop reading the book "Strike It Rich With Pocket Change", it's just a hopes and dreams destroyer on a bunch of coins that you're not going to "strike it rich" with. You have better chances of getting hit by lightning on a sunny cloudless day than finding a coin that is going to "make you rich"
Personally I've never heard of or seen a 40% silver 1971 transitional error. Anybody? These don't exist do they?
To my knowledge there were some identified as being on the 40% silver planchets out of the Denver mint in 1971. I think there were some in 1977-D as well. But like I said, you got better chances of getting hit by lightning than finding any of these so-called "strike it rich" coins found in pocket change.
I know a few 40% 77-D's exist but I've never heard of a confirmed 71-D 40%. Frankly I would be very skeptical that they would exist. Business strike 40% halves had not been struck for two years. Yes 40% 70-D's were struck for mint sets but I would suspect that the planchets for those were more carefully accounted for, and the striking of the coins was quite possible in a separate section than the business strike coinage so it would not be likely that the planchets would get into the production area. No. The tolerances for the clad and 40% planchets were so loose that there is considerable overlap in the weights. A copper nickel clad half could weigh anywhere from 10.88 grams to 11.79 grams. A 40% half could weigh anywhere from 11.1 grams to 11.9 grams. So a coin that weighed anywhere from 11.1 to 11.79 grams could be either composition. The tissue test would be a good first test, but the only sure test to prove it would be a specific gravity test. A copper nickel clad will have a SG of 8.92 and the 40% silver half is 9.53 Weight tolerance variations will not affect this.
Why doesn't the "Strike it Rich" book explain how to tell the difference between a CnClad coin and a Silver Clad Coin??
Define Rich.. I dont think there is a coin in the book the will make a person "rich" As for finding coins in the book.. I actually have coins that are listed in that book. (Did they make me rich?) Again define rich, if 6 figures is rich, then I guess I am rich. If your talking about 7 figures, no. But then I dont think there are any coins listed by Ken or Brian that reach that amount in there. I know of a few others that have coins in that book as well, Including the 1969S DDO that sold for $126,500. Did that coin make Mike Rich? no. To the opening poster, keep looking. I work at the CONECA table at MSNS shows and I see alot of junk come across the tables, but a few times at every show something nice comes across. Have I personally ever seen somebody get "RICH" no, but I think of rich as I no longer have to work and can sit on a beach drinking rum and coke all day with no financial worries.

Good point. I'd say for most people, a coin that makes someone rich would entail they could retire, never work again and several generations after they are long gone are taken care of from the coin found and sold to make them "rich", then you could say you "struck it rich". So yeah, none of the change in your pocket is gonna make you rich. Getting struck by lightning and living to tell the story by writing a book about it might net you just as much money as any coin you find in your change.
You have to understand, you don't strike it rich from finding just one of those coins, you are supposed to use that knowledge to find them over and over again and become rich that way. All you have to do is find a couple of dozen of those 69-S DDO's and at $126,500 you'll have over $3M and you'll be financially set. In other words you just have to have the lightning strike a few dozen times. Simple right.
What? 3 million in the bank means I'm still not quitting my day job. But I would be taking more extravagant vacations.
What can I say, I have a low key lifestyle and could do it with one million. (I wouldn't quit my job either. What would I do with myself? Besides I like it there.) So find a few dozen more.
Oh, me too. 3 million would just be safely tucked away to live on in retirement. I could quit my job easily with that amount dumped on me but I'd keep working to just keep doing something as to not becoming bored.
I have a 74 half and its 11.53 with a specific gravity of 9.54. Am I crazy to think this is a 40% planchet?
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Did you notice that this thread is almost 9 years old? It might be best if you start a new thread and post photos of your coin.
