It was shortened from Confoederatio Helvetica and used for simplicity because Switzerland has 4 official languages
They do have a classic look to them. I've actually found a couple from the 40s in nickel rolls I've searched. Like @hotwheelsearl said, they haven't changed the design forever.

I sometimes find 10 or 20 rappen from the late 1800s in the junk bin, mixed in with coins from almost 100 years later. An amazingly long-lived type. I think this one below was a 25 cent bin find. Still worth almost 25 cents face.
