I went to cash a small check and when the teller opened his till there were some "silver" $s in the large dollar slots. I asked him if those were silver dollars and he said YES. So, I said "I'd like those if you don't mind." He said how many and I said "All of them". Well it turned out there were only 8 of them. He told me an old gentleman said he had to empty out his savings jar. Here are some photos. I believe the first 2 coins are "Talon Head Ikes" and the 3rd is a "Hairlip" Ike. The hairlip is hard to see unless you catch it at the right angle. It's probably also a LDS example. Bruce The reverse of the 3rd coin is in the next post.
got $200 worth at bank went to a bank to get soem half dollars and they had none but teller said we have some IKE dollars, i bought them all, still have some but most had little luster left and heavy bag marks, used them for a while as tips or give to kids at holloween
I'm gonna have to start asking for them as people are cashing them in. I remember when I had $1800 of them in a Reno casino. I cashed them in for greenbacks. Doh! Bruce
Still have about $400 in IKE's. I carry one everyday in my pocket and spend it. At a Starbuck's the cashier looked it over and said, "is this real?"
I used to have a bunch of Ike's but as others are doing I started spending them. I only have a handful left for the kids to play with. I also have been spending the new Sac. Dollars everywhere I go.
Gezzzzz I remember back in the 1960's we used Morgans in most of the $1 slots in Nevada. Wouda, shouda, coulda. Traci
Wow....that would have been cool. So, is there anything common today that will be worth a lot in the future????? If only we had a crystal ball....
Great Ikes! I didn't think they were still out there. Before you spend them, check all 1972-P Ikes for Type 2 reverse. These still carry a premium, even if circulated.
Some people just live in the right places at the right times I guess. Around me if you ask for a half or full sized dollar coin your almost laughed at. I have accounts in 5 different banks and all agree those coins just don't appear anymore. AND if they do, many of the employees are coin collectors so my chances are 000000000000. At Bank of America around me the employees have been told to not order or pass out halves or full sized dollars. If any come in they are supposed to be sent direct to the Federal Researve.
I gave a guy an Ike recently and he had no clue... he was older than me and he really should have known (I'm 40). When I explained that it was Eisenhower, I saw the lightbulb slowly come on. But then I felt funny that he blanked on it, and when I left I wasn't quite sure he really thought it was real money. I felt he was just agreeing with me just for the sake of agreeing with me. I don't know, I thought it would be cool to use them as tips, etc. But I just felt funny with this guy. It was my second failed attempt to get a smile out of a person with an Ike. Instead I felt I was challenging them, or like they thought I was pulling a fast one. Anyone else have this problem?
With the economy, it wouldn't surprise me if we don't start seeing more older coins in the tills as the months go by.
I love using Ike dollars for tips and for other small purchases. When I feel like having some real fun, I'll go to McDonalds and order three items off of the dollar menu... w/ tax the total comes to around $3.29 or so. Then I pay with what I call the "trifecta," a $2 bill, an Ike Dollar and a Kennedy Half... it's really amusing watching the cashier try to figure out where to put each in the cash drawer
You brought up a good point, maybe halves and dollar coins would be used more often if the register actuallly had room for them!
well many registers do have a spot for another denomination (either halves or dollars or both). that's the spot that most businesses use to hold paperclips and extra rolls of the other coins though.
Yeah at my work we have 1 extra slot and that's where extra rolls are kept. I propose the dollar bill slot is removed and dollar coins go there instead
i wish i could get ike from the bank. i bought 200 pc xf and above at $1.15 each from a dealer few years ago. it was very heavy.
I just did that with 3 kids selling blueberries by the side of the road $3.75 for half a paper bag full. $2 bill, Ike, bicent. half and normal half. Only 1 kid had seen a half before, so I talked to them about it for a few mins. Maybe they will start collecting:high5:.
