I liked the shield too. This design reflects a lack of imagination. If you look at the roster of who's on that commission, there are some very respectable names. Lord only knows what they were thinking. I suppose there's zero chance their recommendation will be ignored. Sigh.
It seems to be the oppinion of most collectors I talk to that the US mint coinage of the last 10 years has been unimaginative at best. This is just a shining example of that philosophy. B-O-R-I-N-G!!! There were much much much better choices then this piece. Right now our coins STINK! We have dollar coins that don't circulate and look like casino tokens I received in Las Vegas. Big Stylized "$1" CAMON!! The cents don't bother me too much. I'm surprised there isn't a big "1" with a cents sign after it somewhere on the coin tho. Most of the state quarters are ugly and unappealing and I'm sure that the National Parks coins will be even worse. I do admit that I do find some of the commemorative dollars of the last 10 years appealing. The Lincoln dollar and the Marine corps dollar specifically. But over all the mint gets a D from me.
Texas seceded from the USA last night, Hawaii is going thru a political coup by militants from Tahiti, California has just declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is in the process of being renamed "Twinkleland," and didn't you hear about the USA staging a fake coup to wipe out the debt?
Ugly, unimaginative and not artistic. I say we have enough cents, either reduce the mintage going to a high releif Liberty/eagle design or drop it all together.
And people were complaining about this year's designs!! Hoooooly....:computer: I think I will buy my 2009 proof sets sooner than later. And then never look at the cent again. That is atrocious. Boring, unimaginative. The list of adjectives you could use is endless. This is a flop. I give it an 'F'. At the least the flag should have been wavy and realistic. This makes the Barber dime look like a master piece. (No offense to Barber dime collectors because I like them too.) Really, what are they thinking? I think this will increase the value of every pre-2010 cent greatly. My God. What got rejected!?!?
I agree that the flat flag is not a very inspired design. As noted it would strike well. Still there must be a design that will strike well, maybe include a Union Shield, something with a historical twist to it. Maybe something like this.......
I can't understand how the old wheat reverse or the reverse of the IHC can be called so overwhelmingly more beautiful or more inspired than, for example, the new wheat or the flag design. There really should be some uniformity in the set of circulating coin denominations in my opinion, and all coins should be redesigned at once and by the same artist or atleast following the same style.
There's also a thing called "progress" I'm a young person, student of history by the way, and I like to see progress and development instead of... the opposite. The designs of the US coins are none of my business really, being a Finn living in Russia, but I've always wondered how the US coin series looks so old fashioned. The new obverse of the 5 cent piece is would be a great model for the rest of the coins too. I understand that we have grown to appreciate different things in art, such as coin designs. One likes it modern, the other doesn't. Oh, and please don't get me wrong. I really love the old coins and their designs, but I think that the coins should reflect their time. New coin should look new and not something which is borrowed from Ancient Rome.
In the US we don't have a long history of actual people on our coinage. Only about 100 years. Our first President forbade the use of his image as a matter of fact. That changed in 1932, without his consent. Coinage design speaks to a nations history. Many collectors of US coins prefer the allegorical image of Lady Liberty that graced our coins, I am in that group. That said, new is not always better. But I understand it takes a person time to appreciate that thought.
