No idea about the UK, but some places in Sweden do that too, either because they are close to Finland, or because they think they can attract tourists that way. Nice gestures, but would I (being from the euro area) really care whether this store or that theater accepts euro cash?

It may be a different story near a border, such as in Ireland: If I know that "on the other side" pretty much every place accepts my cash, then that is actually an advantage. Was like that around here (parts of BE, DE, LU, NL) before the euro cash came: Somewhat convenient but still a hassle.

Later this year I will be in Copenhagen and Malmö for a few days. Will be like in a museum - cross border, get different cash. For a two or three week vacation I don't mind, but in this case, argh. Fortunately there's plastic. :)

All those countries will eventually join the euro, anyway.

In the case of Denmark it would even make some sense - the krone is "tied" to the euro anyway, with a ~2 percent (+/-) fluctuation band.

All the other countries ... frankly, who cares. As long as the European Union grows (in terms of new member states), there will always be countries that use the euro, and others that don't. Now those member states that actually want the euro but currently do not meet the convergence criteria may get into the currency union during the next couple of years - and those that want to stay out simply stay out.

If I was cynical, I would say, "Hmm, a report about the use of the euro in the UK? Must be the silly season for the media again. Where's Nessie by the way?" But I'm nice today ... :D

They'll come around. The pound was well over 1.5 euros not very long ago, and look at it now. If they join the euro, they will be more protected. The larger the number of countries that join, the more advantages there are to join it.

Fer sure, who uses cash anyway. The Visa or Mastercard is todays international currency. Good in N/S America, Asia, Europe,Australia. Ripley :kewl:

    Deja vu across the pond.

The first time I was old enough to remember being in Canada, almost 60 years ago, US currency was accepted almost everywhere. Across the northern tier of states Canadian currency could be used many places, just not as widespread as the other way around.
