Hey, I know that they were melted, but how many (roughly) are there still out there!?!? (Just bought an 1878-CC today, can't find camera will post pics later)..but like how many are there still around? I know in 1878, there were 2,212,000 minted, but how many are there today!?!
According to david bowers, GSA released 60993 in 1964, 100,000-125000 from 1930's to 1962. At least 25,000 have been slabbed as MS60 and above.
But don't be confused by the above comment, what Bowers is saying is that those were released by banks in the normal sense - in ordinary commercial transactions. This is what the GSA sales released. 1878-CC ..........60,993 1879-CC ...........4,123 1880-CC .........131,529 1881-CC .........147,485 1882-CC .........605,029 1883-CC .........755,518 1884-CC .........962,638 1885-CC .........148,285 1889-CC ...............1 1890-CC ...........3,949 1891-CC ...........5,687 1892-CC ...............1 1893-CC ...............1
I have a co-worker who buys several CC's a week. He is pretty much a CC geek and can't get enough. Pretty sure this won't dent the population though.
Bowers also gives estimates, in his Red Book guide, of remaining morgans for each year and mint mark. For the 1878 CC the "field" is: MS60-MS62: 100,000-140,000 MS63: 25,000-35,000 MS64: 15,000-25,000 MS65: 4,000-8,000 MS66: 1,000-2,000 MS67+: 26-45 So just in UNC Bowers estimates there are around 145,000 to 210,000 1878 CCs still available.
Thanks! wow to go from a mintage or 2,212,000, to about 200,000 left is a big difference! They're a very cool coin!
One very important thing to note though, not 200,000 left, just around 200,000 left in uncirculated condition. The number of circulated coins isn't included.
WOW guys thanks for those numbers , just got my first 1884 cc last week , now will be on the hunt for more.
Why there are 2,211,999 left since you now have one. :goofer: They are sort of like and Edsel auto. When new who cared. Now worth a lot of money. As to how many are left. If you start counting them you may be the only person that knows. Sort of like asking how many 1943 Lincoln Cents are left.
You own one, and I own the rest, they are all under the oak tree out back. Congrats on your first CC morgan, you've been saving and saving and it finally paid off, didn't it? Congrats.:thumb:
Mighty nice, trade dollar!! I was trying to buy one of those before, until I found out what they cost, dang!! Oh well, I still have my 1878 cc silver dollar that I got for $90 dollars and that will have to hold me until I create more money...
