I'm seeking the advice of fellow collectors. Nothing too serious but I have a lot of junk walkers and silver wash. quarters.About thirty or forty of each. I would like to upgrade both of these two sets but am having a really hard time letting them go. I'm wondering if maybe I should keep them and just upgrade slowly (even though I am on a limited budget)or should I sell and only be able to buy a few better condition coins? If I were to sell what should I be asking for, melt value or collector value? Most of the ones I am speaking of are G to VF.It sounds dumb coming out but can anyone identify with me?:headbang:
You might want to offer the walkers to coworkers and friends, I was able to sell quite a few of those for 12X spot, if not you can always sell them to a local dealer, just remember if you sell them chances are pretty slim that you will be able to buy more for that price. I think the cheapest I have seen any walkers for at the local shop was 9 bucks for a coin that would have to stretch to make an ag-3
Bit of a dilema eh UCoin? Sounds to me like you picked these coins up in your younger days, or, if you're not as old as I am, could be that someone near and dear left 'em to you. I've got many so called "junkers" that I picked up as a young lad (paper route) and would never think of parting with them. They reside in a very special place within my collection....
No problem at all. Do as I do. I start an Album of one type with anything at all. Then as I acquire higher grades I replace the ones in the Album, put the one from the Album in a 2x2. Eventually when I see to many 2x2's of one type, I acqure another Album, take all out of the 2x2's and start Album #2. Next if I acquire a higher grade coin than in set #1, it goes into #1 and the one from #1 goes to #2 and the one from #2 goes into a 2x2. I've been doing this for a long, long time. Example is 12 sets of Mercury Dimes, 10 sets of Lincoln Cents, etc., etc., etc. In other words, keep everything.
I have no major regrets in coin collecting, because I haven't sold any of my coins. I got my first coins when I was 6...now roughly a quarter century later I still have just about everything. I've given a couple low-grade coins away to kids and that's it. I have sold some duplicate currency, but I treat that differently than my coins. The reason I'm glad I did this and continue to do it is for all the other things I've sold in my life that I would love to have back. Had a really sweet .357 Magnum that I wish I hadn't sold. The truck I drove in high school would look really sweet in my garage...too bad I sold it when I was 18. Stuff like that. I know my answer isn't right for everyone...just something to consider. For your particular situation, I'd hold onto those coins strictly for the silver value.
I just wanted to thank everyone for their input!:smile I think I will go with the consensus and just keep them. I don't want to regret it later. I guess I just get a little too eager to have the best of everything sometimes even though it may be outside of my means. I just needed a push in the right direction Thanks everyone!
I have a lot of junk silver in my collection that I will never sell. I think you made a good decision.
To me I would keep the old ones as a silver investment. It could be good to go slow then you can be really picky about the upgrade and make sure it has everything you want like luster strike maybe even a certain toning look.
i have been thinking about selling my extra coins to upgrade as well now i know i will hold onto them
.......keep them if you wish. BUT whether you keep or sell or trade, check them against the cherrypickers' guide. you MAY find a surprise in your stash.
