I am trying to see how my grading compair's to some of the pro's out there.... So, what would you grade this Lincoln?
Hiya, Well I'm hardly a pro, but I'll share my opinion anyway, I say MS 61, with a shot at 62 depending how those nicks look in hand.
Kinda ****ty of him leaving you hanging like that...he should of elaborated.... I have no clue what he is talking about but then again I don't know much about US pennies. The only thing that I could guess it could be, if it is indeed a fake, is that the "S" mint mark's perimeter is indented. But to tell you the truth I can't find nothing in my books that tell me this coin is a fake. Let's just wait for someone more experienced to chime in... Note that Rlm didn't say it was fake nor did Snaz
Heh, yeah, I woulda preferred some comment as to why he thought it was counterfeit. Though I don’t know of a resource that lists all die varieties for that year and can’t confirm for sure that the S is ok, but I think it is. To me, it is a little odd that the S is a toned, or spotted, as it is but it still looks legit. The most common counterfeit, to my knowledge, is actually an altered 1936 S, which has a different 3. In this case, the three is correct.
The coin has been cleaned -, there's no luster, the color isn't right and the spots that were probably trying to be "cleaned away" have reappeared. So with the cleaning, spots, and little nicks especially on the face and head area, it probably had MS details, but I would give it net AU.
sorry jmon, I had to get out for a dr's appt, so i didn't elaborate. The "S" looked as though it may have been added post mint. Hard to say for sure from a picture. If, that is not the case, I would agree with Penny's grading of AU.
I grade that coin about $90-$115 I won't try to judge originality from an internet pic, but I do suspect Charmy is correct. This coin runs only about $5 between grades from good thru AU, then only minimal steps up to about 64 RB.......Gem red is not even rare. Nice date, decent coin, but just be grounded with your expectations of grade and or value. EDIT: With a red juiced pic and a great " my dead grandma description ", that coin grades about $200+ on the bay. ( I know, I'm bad )
au-58, it loses a bit because of the breath spots on it, at least i think those spots come from someone talking on it, the color looks more brown red than red brown, thanks for posting it, my reference for grading it is coin worlds "Making The Grade" My sister wanted dads penny collection but I seem to remember a few of his having those little bluish spots, I wonder if they turn to those green spots after a while.
Amazing differance in the photos.....this coin is beginning to look like so many that were stored in a cardboard 2x2 with a hole or three in the mylar..... No more guesses from me, but, it does look better in the " in hand pic " Any decent 1931-S should fetch you over $100, more if sold retail, Ebay etc etc
What do you mean by decent? VF? XF? What will this one fetch? Its not for sale though. It should look familiar.
Harry, IMO, that's about a 145-150$ coin. 31S is very common in high grade. This isn't really a coin someone would want to counterfeit. To be honest. If I was to counterfeit one of these as G4 and have the only 31S with a pop of 1.
I gather they get expensive at MS 65? If that's the case I should start buying these raw and slabbing them. As far as I knew they started getting expensive around 66. Without much of a price difference from AU 50 - MS64 Maybe Ill do a little more research on HA before I open my mouth next time.
