Hey eveyrone, Just wondering if you think this is doubled Monticello on this 1939 nickel. Siggi :thumb:
it is from die deterioration. Or fatigue, whatever you want to call it. I have one very similar that Ken Potter, Fred Weinberg both have looked at and came to the same conclusions.
Hi Siggi, I would favor die deterioration myself as it doesn't look like die #1, or die#2. Here is a link to the die #1. Dies #2 , the last "O" in monticello is oval or egg shaped. http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t46461/ Jim
Is FIVE CENTS doubled too? Both Monticello and Five cents are doubled. I post a picture of a MS-65 double in a few to use as a reference Paddy
1939 WDDR-001 Nickel Class lV ,offset hub doubling extremely strong spread to the west shows FIVE CENTS < MONTICELLO and slighly on the upper letters of U.S. a slight CW pivot at 12 o'clock Cross reference l -R-lll,FS # 5-22,Breen 2665 Rarity = RARE . I hope you can click on this picture to see the doubling. PCGS MS-65 Paddy
Thank you Paddy, But what I can see is the only doubling is the monticello and on jefferson. No other letters seem to have any doubling. Siggi
Siggi, There is some doubbling on the words United States the FIVE CENTS will make you feel like you are seeing double for sure! Glad I could be of help...I have seen several like yours in my time. I always thought myself at first they were DD. And maybe a break down of the die making the words look more mushy than doubled. But keep looking one never knows what one might find in change etc. I always pick up a coin I see. After I heard of the time in NYC that they used a 1909 S VDB as bate on a side walk and also paid for a soft pretzel with an 1937 buffalo nickel 3 legger! YVW Paddy
It is Machine doubling. The "C" in "MONTICELLO" is the giveaway on this one. the doubled "C" would be doubled to the east as the rest of the letters do. This one has the self-like appearance the the west which would indicate MD. It also has die-deterioration causing the letters to actually have a "floating" appearance to them.
There was a gorgeous 1939 Jefferson Nickel DDR (Doubled Monticello) that just sold in the Los Angeles Sale. Here is a close up of the reverse so that you can see the difference between your coin and the DDR along with a link to the auction. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1128&Lot_No=373 And no, I did not buy it. But I did buy lot #374.
Nice coins... what was the price of the 1939 DDR ? I'm not a member of Hertage group...and can't pull up the price ...Thanks I believe I paid 1300.00 for my PCGS MS-65 but it's not full steps....Paddy
