Got a lead on a 1884 Morgan Carson Ctiy been graded ICG 63 for $ 189. So I'am going to check it out Sunday and I'am wondering if this is a good buy or not. This gentleman says he has 2 of these coins both ICG 63 & I would have the choice of which one I want depending on my eye appeal. Since I only have a few morgans, this is one I've been really looking for, the morgan cc , don't have this mint mark. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. This gentleman says he needs to sell so he can buy another coin to finish his collection.
I think the price is fair. Would like it better about $20 or so cheaper, but you get to look at them and pick the best. Go first on eye appeal as you tilt it back and forth, and watch the luster and cartwheel effect. Decide which has the best. Then look carefully at the face ( esp. the cheek) and the field in front of the face. Check the reverse eagle chest for marks thirdly. If the same coin is best on all accords, you have a winner. I would go more by obverse than the reverse. There are some nice 84CC VAMS that could give a premium, as ICG doesn't put the VAM on the label unless more is paid. There are some easy to spot like spikes in the numbers of the date and doubled dates, but if you are going to keep it go by appeal. Good Luck Jim
Check the completed auction prices on ebay, I think you will find this price is high (particularly for an ICG graded coin).
Good price for that coin, especially if it it appeals to you. That's only about 10% over wholesale (greysheet) and well below retail. ICG doesn't get the respect of PCGS or NGC but it's a legit TPG and probably deserves more respect. If I'm buying a coin that won't be part of a NGC Registry Set then ICG is perfectly acceptable.
Thanks a lot guys, you've been a great help, I'll be checking this coin out today and now I know what to look for. I've been following a similar coin on e-bay, same 1884 morgan icg & it closed for $ 155 this morning, & this will probably be my offer.
I have seen them listed for as much as 250, that does not mean they sell for that routinely, its like the boy that had the lemonade stand with a handprinted sign that said, Lemonade 100$, a man passing by said, young man at those prices you will not sell much lemonade, the boy said, I know, but I will only have to sell one.
Yessss had to get it , great luster, face area & cheek area clean & no scratches on the chest,, I love it!!!!! I copied the e-bay auction ending this morning & showed it to the gentleman showing the $ 155 selling price & he countered for $ 160 & I blurted out sold, geeeezzzzzzzz thanks guys for the tips. This gentleman even thru in a 2009 red book, which I didn't have. What a great way to start the day, my first Carson City Morgan & its beautiful. As soon as I get a digital camera with a better macro than mine I'll post pictures.
Good! Excellent price also. Now go to Vamworld.com and try to see what VAM variety it is. Even if common, still excellent deal. Look forward to a photo someday. Jim
I read a post where it said you could use your camera and a 10x loop , aaaaaaaa it works,, but it came out sepia colored, ooh well.
From the pics it looks like you did good. Congrats on adding one of the most sought after mint marks.
Thanks folks I love this coin, I''ve went to the vam site & my eyes are crossed from looking at this coin , not as easy as one thinks, but I'll learn. In the mean time I've posted another coin that I was checking which has a strange shaped s, sorry about my pics but still learning about that too. Geeezzzzzzzz
