US Mint - Price Match

    Howdy folks,

I know that many folks here don't purchase much of the new stuff; and even when they do, they'll often avoid the US Mint. Having said that, I thought my recent experience might help somebody so figured I'd share --

Back in January, I preordered a handful of the Law Enforcement coins: UNC $.50, PR $.50, UNC $1, PR $1, and UNC $5. The UNC $5 was listed at $671; however, by yesterday, the price on the US Mint site fell to $646. I called their customer service and was informed that 1) I would be billed the original price when the order shipped (not the current price) and that 2) the US Mint does not adjust prices on confirmed orders.

Here's the kicker: customer service was able to cancel just that item from my existing order. And I was able to re-order the same UNC $5 at the current, lower price. Figured this might save somebody else $25; or at least be a 'nice to know' for future purchases.

Should have asked if it works the same way when the price goes up

I thought about that after I hung up... :)

I wonder/suspect that if it worked the other way around (ie. confirmed at lower price, but coin/gold price went up by shipping time), they might charge more; could be buried in the fine print of their ToS. I suppose, that's the gamble of pre-ordering.

Also, was curious; looked up the sales figures. Kinda as anticipated, these are not really in demand much... even less than the Christa McAuliffe dollars.

Would certainly be interesting to know if that was only when it worked in their favor.

I had a feeling these probably weren't going to sell very well. The Mcaulifee is a solid design but as mentioned a lot of people kind of get rubbed the wrong way that one member of the crew is being singled out like that. I know they did the 7 stars on the reverse for the whole crew, but most people will probably miss that. I think they should have at least done the reverse in a more direct whole crew manner.

The LEO Museum half is interesting, but those never sell out the mintage is always so high for the halfs. The dollars the design is really meh and completely uninspiring which is a shame since the first LEO coin had a great design and is one of the more popular ones. The reverse of the gold is nice, but very few will buy a gold coin for one side.

They certainly aren't the worst designs theyve ever done, but they do both leave a lot to be desired

Wanted to follow up (in case anybody was curious...) -- as mentioned above, I canceled my uncirculated gold coin and reordered at a lower price. Today, the price is higher than when I confirmed my order; US mint charged me the confirmed price (not today's current, higher price). Looking forward to see these in hand! Demand is still quite low...

I am glad it worked out for you @Dima! I wanted to order the Law Enforcement coins, but after the bad experience I've had with the 2021 Proof set, I canceled my order. I'd like to get the 2021 Peace Dollar too, but if the Mint can't deliver the product, why try?

They need to spend less time talking about "coin enthusiasts" and more time concentrating on the basics, like fulfilling their orders. I have to wait until May 11 before they will address my problem.

One buyer posted that he got the April 27 message that his order had been shipping, like I did. He got his coins yesterday. I went to the post office today, and there's still nothing. My order number is useless and the post office tracking number says it's never been shipped.

The Mint has charged my credit card, however, which shows my order has their limited attention. :(

Yikes... experiences like that are a real bummer. Hopefully your order is found!
