Nero Ae Sestertius Rome 64 AD Obv. Head right laureate Rv. Nero right on prancing horse Behind second rider with vexilium. RIC 172 26. 36 grms. Photo by W. Hansen It is interesting that Nero saw the need to create this image. It is probable that even he was beginning to realize that all that Olympic greenery was not doing much for his reputation especially after the great fire. One can see in this obverse image an effort by the celators to create an image of strength and power. By crowding the features of the face in one tight area. The detail of the face coupled with the intricately detailed rendition of his hair contrasts so vividly with the largely blank area of his cheek and neck thus creating an intensity that is quite striking.
Yours looks to be of a comparable grade/condition to that of the Agora coin I showed on the previous page. It would likely fetch between $25-$40. A dealer might list it at the higher end of that range. It is a fairly rare coin; at least as it relates to how many have been listed @auction over the last couple of decades. In better condition, it might fetch more than other more common Sestertii of Gordian III in similar condition. Cool coin.
How about my absolutely horrible, but quite rare, Carausius, with ADVENTVS AVG reverse? I wouldn't be able to afford one in nicer condition (unless I found it in an unresearched eBay lot or something), so this is the next best thing... I guess
First of all thanks to you for your time. Secondly I've got other question. How do you clean bronze coins? What do you think cleaning lightly with soapy water? Thanks
