I have a 1928 Peace Dollar. How do I know if it is an S or P? Where is the S on the coin? On the bird side there is something that looks like maybe a 3 or an 8 on the left side in the rays up above the one. it's near the birds wing feathers. I'm new here and don't know anything about coins.
    Thanks

Here is a pic of where the mint mark goes. On the reverse (eagle side) below the one. It will have either D, S or nothing.

PS, you're first lesson on coins, you should not clean them.

Thank you very much! There is nothing there. I guess I need to have it graded or something to know what it is really worth.

If there is nothing there it is a Phillidelphia mint coin.

    key date

Congratulations!! If authentic, you have an expensive key date to the series. Handle it with care and don't clean it.

See if you can find a dealer in your area to give you an opinion as to its authenticity. Some Peace dollars have the mint mark removed to look like the key date.

And if you have the ability, post a photo of that area. There are counterfeits and altered 1928-S coins by removing the "s". A dealer should be able to tell. However, it is worth the grading fee.

I would like to sell it. I was laid off and looking for rent money. I took pictures. I'll have to see if I can figure out how to show the pictures here. I assume I need to have it graded to be able to sell it for the best price. I don't know if I can afford that. I guess I'll check some coin dealers in my area.

Sorry but it was harshly cleaned so that takes quite a bit of value off of it.

Normally I would say it's probably a $400 to $500 coin, but you'll be lucky to half that.
