Here are two more errors I just got back from NGC (and Todd at bluccphotos.com, my fantastic photographer). Not quite as cool as the 11 cent Double Denomination on my other post, but I like them because they are unique. However, I have a question about the 50% Off Center Uniface Reverse. Is that thick section between the obverse and the blank planchet an extra error? If so, what is it called? I posted this on the CU forum and it was suggested that it's a stretch strike? What are your thoughts?

I would say they are correct. I would call it a 'uniface stretch strike'.

    Penny Lady,

I don't think it is actually considered an error but maybe Mike Diamond or another knowledgeable Error person will have the answer! This stretching occurs with quite a few coins that are struck that much off-center. For my explanation, coin will be used to indicate the planchet/coin. If I am not mistaken, the machinery is trying to eject the coin (at least the half outside of the Striking Chamber) but the other half of the coin is anchored by the collar and the Dies upon striking, so the coin is being stretched in the middle. I hope I got the cause correct!

    Hi,

I might have labeled it differently, the reverse had another coin stuck between it and the die. I would have added that the reverse shows an indented strike.

    Thanks ,

On the first coin, I see 5 or 6 clips. Why is it slabbed as 3?

I think you might be seeing the devices that hold the coin in place in the slab.

Yes, that's exactly what it is - the new NGC slab inserts have three prongs that hold coins in place so you can see the rims of coins even in the slabs. However, it's nearly impossible for photographers to edit them completely out of close up photos of the coins.

Thanks, but the October Tucson show has been cancelled because Tony bought a shop and doesn't have the time to put it on in October. However, they said the January show is still on. Guess you'll have to trek your little self all the way to So Cal if you want to see it before January!

Tucson, did someone say Tucson. I usually go there about twice a year to visit in-laws. Tell me more.

There is/was a coin show at the Tucson Convention Center the end of October and 3rd week in January, but the October show is now cancelled. Keep an eye on my website as I post all the shows I attend there with dates, times, location, etc.
