Hey guys. Hope you don't mind a stranger stopping by. Are there any Canadians here that would like to share some knowledge with me? When I was into coin collecting as a kid, somebody gave me a Loon dollar. I don't know where it came from, who gave it to me or where it is now. It's long gone. I barely remember it but I remember I really liked it. So I just bought a BU one for the fun of it. I've seen and heard Loons out on the lakes in northern Minnesota. I always thought they were really cool birds and it made for a neat design on a coin. Anyway, so far I've found out that 1987 was the first year for them. That's the one I bought. How long did that style last for?? And what were the series of dollars you guys used from say 1850 up to 1987? What were the metal contents of them? And what's happened after the Loon dollar series up to now? We barely get any news or info about Canada in the U.S. I don't even know what Canada's circulating coinage looks like right now. And I'm a collector. Pretty sad. Well, thanks for any help/pics, etc...
Let's see if I can work up a nice iPhone post for you. I peruse cointalk on my way home from work but I'll pull over to reply to this one. The loon dollar started in 1987 an is still in circulation. It's been in for 22 years and I don't see an end in sight. Before that from 67 - 87 was a nickel voyageur dollar. Which contained no silver in it. And a portrait of young queen Elizabeth. Before that, was 90% silver dollars from 1932 - 1966. The first year coin is extremely affordable for most budgets and a great coin to have in MS condition. An MS 62 ish will run you about 30$ don't assume the rest are that cheap though! Now.. Let's see if I can find a picture to share. http://www.coincollectinguniversity.com/var/files/website/photogallery/onlinestore/_lg.jpg
Actually the Silver dollar run from 1935 to 1967 and it was 80% silver. 1968 was the first pure nickel dollar.
There was an attempt to introduce a sterling silver dollar in 1911 but the idea was eventually scrapped. Only two silver trial patterns and one lead trial pattern are known to exist.
nobody really 'used' the coin dollar or the .50 cent piece. They did away with the 1&2 dollar notes in exchange for coins to weigh our pockets down. Eventually, the 5 dollar note will also be replaced by a coin. http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/banknotes/general/character/index.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_1_dollar_coin
Haha, I knew someone would correct me on that stuff. I re read it after I got back on the road and had no desire to go back in with the phone and edit it. Lol thanks Defiant!
Wow, that was fast! Thanks for the effort snaz! You didn't have to pull over for me. lol So what's the deal with the Canada goose dollars and the guys in the canoe? Were they year specific? Were proofs prevalent? How many design changes has the Loon dollar had? Does everybody hate having their pockets weighed down now? What Canada did is like a dream scenario to most U.S. collectors. It seems like that's what everybody wants here. Maybe it would be a pain.
