Hello Ripley, I don’t own one. My knowledge of the Maria Theresa Thaler is really minimal. I believe it is a bullion coin that has been around since it was first minted in the mid 18th century. I was told that Maria Theresa was the ruler of Austria at the time. Beyond that, I don’t know all the countries & varieties & dates that have been minted. Is that her portrait that is on the coin? Perhaps someone could chime-in & educate me. Very best regards, collect89
I have a few of them. This one is, I think but am not 100% positive, a 1932-1935 restrike, Hafner 58.
My only Maria, I rescued it from a junk bin for under $10 if I remember correctly....it is a restrike, but a nice one
before i used to like foreign crown. but when american eagle started in 1986. i say good bye to them.
Here is my one and only Thaler. I'm told it's a restrike. How does one tell one (re)strike from another? Are there any useful online resources?
I would like to know the answer too. If I understand correctly, everything is identical between the two coins, the original and the restrike. The same original dies are used for the second production. So how you tell one from the other, especially if both are in excellent condition?
How about an: Habsburg: Medaille o. J. (1777), auf die Huldigung Yperns. Stempel von Th. van Berckel. Büste / Löwe mit Säule und Wappen. De Coster 868; Slg. Julius 2036; Slg. Montenuovo 2092. 10.97 g.; 32,5 mm... .In English: Medal ND (1777) to the homage of Ypres (Belgian municipality located in the Flemish province of West Flanders.)
CoinTalks very own Jd White, also a VIP with W.I.N.S. is probably the foremost expert that I can think of on these Marias... His internet is spotty, he is on occasionally, but his knowledge of these is unsurpassed. GD may also chime in with some casual info.....but JD is the king of the Marias:kewl:
I saw this on the bay and fell in love with the case and the toning. I picked it up for less than $15! The strike looks weak or the coin has been circulated. I'll leave that up for the experts. I am confused since I can still see mint luster. Opinions please. Below is a certified restrike which has been cleaned, but has full strike. To me the toned coin looks better. Which would you rather own? Also anyone able to interpet the COA?
Well I picked up another MT. I tentatively believe it to be the 1937 Brussels restrike. Still a pretty coin. I suppose we could guess on MT's bust line, I say 44DD. Jello, the most common way to ID which restrike it is; by the Arabesque on the rim of the coin and a stylized "X" on the reverse. Traci :goofer:
