Any takers on that one? I am new to collecting. Obviously I would only start my collection after getting educated . . .

I would by a $20 dollar gold piece and a 1/4 oz american buffalo. I think that would take the pot. If I had anything left, maybe I would get something to eat. :eating:

Depends on if I wanted to buy one nice coin or to start a nice collection.

If I wanted to spend the $2k on one coin, I'd probably go for a really nice high AU to low MS 1955 Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln.

If I was going for a bunch of coins, I'd probably buy a bag or two of wheat cents and a $100 or so face of various 90% junk silver coins to sort out and look at :)

I would chase me down the most beautiful 3 legger Buffalo that ever existed.....I have seen many super primo AU's in the $1500/$2000 range that are just plain beautiful. One I regret not buying.

And where does one chase one down? ebay, other online auction sites, coin shows? what has worked best for you (keep in mind I'm a newbie and am not good at negotiating face to face with a dealer - yet . . . ) tx

if I had 2k I would buy ALOT! of American silver eagles (1 troy ounce of .999 silver each I figured I could get 129 and shipping or 130 and pay $4 out of my pocket to get that extra one

silver is gonna go up and ppl are buying the crap out of it for like $19 each or more it's a decent 20% profit give or take per one I didn't wanna keep out of the assortment I can get for the price and keep trading around making more and more of my collection :D

Might be able to find a deal on eBay, but I've found much better deals buying from fellow collectors on the coin forums.

I had that very problem a couple months ago and bought this. It really depends on what you want:kewl:

Editted to add a Larger photo as requested . Sorry for the small one.

FRANCE Royal Issues Jean II, 'Le Bon' 1350-1364

    AV Mouton d'Or 4.60g. 30mm. Struck 1355

Nimbate 'Agnus Dei' ( Lamb of God ) standing left before cross with pendant; IOH-REX in exergue

+AGN. DEI. QVI. TOLL. PECA. MUDI. MISERERE. NOB

Compound cross fleuronee, quartered with fleurs-de-lys, all within polylobe

XPE: VINCIT: XPE: REGNAT: XPE: IMPERAT

    Duplessy 291: Ciani 354: Friedberg 280

EF. Superlative strike; sharp and complete, and SCARCE as such.

Reverse double-struck, tiny scratch on right of lamb, a couple of tiny dents in rim - suggestive of former fit in a 4-pronged bezel.

The double strike is probably why the obverse was struck up so perfectly, as the flan remained in the obverse die for two strikes. Distinguisable from the cheaper Jean & Wenceslaus Brabant issue by the use of 'REX' instead of 'DVX' on obverse.

When I saw it, I knew I needed to own it. It has shifted my collecting into a new area, Unfortunate for my pocketbook however;)

I would check craigslist or ebay for an entire collection to buy, especially since you are just starting out. If you don't want to take a chance on getting burned, then I'd take the money and find a local coin auction or two in the newspaper. That way, you'd at least get to LOOK at what you were buying first.
