I got my CW today, and one of the cover stories is the "new" reverse for the nickel starting in '06. It's the original design Schlag created for the reverse back in 1938. More detail around the edges of the building, but nothing that would be noticed by John Q. Public. Although I'm glad that the Mint appears to be making an effort to get rid of poor "redesigns," couldn't they come up with something better than this? They had an opportunity to do something exciting, but didn't.

At least they won't be going back to the old obverse.

That is because the legislators from Virginia "pulled the wool over our eyes" when they agreed to other members of Congress to allow differant reverses in 2004 and 2005, only IF Monticello will be permanent as the reverse after 2006.

    That's right...PERMANENT!

There is a possibility, but don't hold your breath. The article states "the original Schlag design. His original design was rejected and he re-worked it and it was approved. So maybe there will be something different. Maybe.

No chance. Don't get your hopes up. I know which design you are talking about. Re-read the US MInt press release. It's the design that was on the nickel from 1938-2003, only with almost undetectable detail changes.

No piece of legislation is permanent unless it takes the form of a constitutional amendment, and even THEY are not permanent (just hard to change). The reverse of Monticello will be "permanent" until Congress votes to change it again.
