I'm a newbie so forgive me, but the greysheets I have seen only show a limited number of us coins. Is that the deal, they only show the most popular coins, or am I missing some pages? Thanks!
That's right. There's the weekly Newsletter that includes Commems, Morgan and Peace Dollars, Proof Sets and Mint Sets and Type Coins. The Monthly Suppliment includes coins that are not generally as volitile as those in the weekly Newsletter - Early Gold Type, Gold Indians and St. G, Proof Gold, Flying Eagle Cents, Indian Head Cents, Early Lincoln Cents, Two Cents, Three Cents (Silver & Nickel), Shield Nickels, Liberty Nickels, Buffalo Nickels, Barber Dimes, Quarters & Halves, Mercury Dimes, Standing Lib Quarters, Washington Quarters, Walking Lib Halves, Franklin Halves. Then there are three Quarterly Newsletters. Each one includes a portion of the remaining coins. If you only collect a series that is included in the weekly Newsletter you don't need to subscribe to the other issues. But if you collect something else - say Capped Bust Halves - you would need a full subscription.
Unless I am a dealer or big time collector I dont imagine it would be worth it to subscribe to the whole package. Thanks for the info. Maybe some day . . .
It depends on what you collect. You could save more than the cost of the subscription on one coin. Keep in mind that you can buy single issues and you can buy the complete set (Weekly, Monthly and 3 Quarterlies) for a reasonable price. That might be a good way to go before going to a coin show.
Thanks. Yes, I am going to a large show in N. Virginia this weekend. Although in my mind I am alotting about $6,000 to a new coin collection, I don't anticipate buying anything just yet. Just building my knowledge first. Any advice regarding going to a coin show? Can I learn much? Tx
What about the different grades? For example, every issue of the greysheet I've ever seen only listed Walking Liberty Halves in MS grades. Thats all well and good for the common dates, but not so much for the keys.
Hobo is correct, the best value is to call them and ask for the " package " which will include all issues of every series. You can add a binder at minimal cost. Many series do not get the full up and down, only the most popular series get that treatment. CDN is cheap if you trade regularly, I think I pay about $100 a year.....you can make or save that $100 on a single coin. EDIT: As for whats missing? I would like to see 64-RB copper, 64RB copper and more Morgan prices.....grade and PL designations, not just DMPL
You can learn a lot and do it without flashing a Greysheet in front of a dealer's nose. Build your knowledge. I like this advice actually.
current year and low grades were not shown on CDN newsletter. beside that. dealers will bid 10% more or less lower than CDN bid. simple as that. because we are not a dealer. and if you want to buy from them. it will be CDN ask price plus 10% to 50% mark up i think.
Some of the more esoteric corners of our hobby are missing from the Greysheet - colonials, California fractionals, territorials / pioneer, patterns, and tokens of all sort.
