That's Brilliant, @ominus1. Just from memory, the Order of the Golden Fleece was founded vaguely in the 15th century. Was the founder a king of France, or a duke of Burgundy? Regardless, the depiction of the insignia is fantastic.
Thanks for that, @ominus1! ...Except, well, wait, Philippe III of France was king between Louis IX and Philippe IV, back to the later 13th century. (Knew that, since he was the last Capetian king in the direct line of descent.) Philippe III of Burgundy was indeed a cadet member of the succeeding Valois royal dynasty, but only reigned as Duke. Here, right off of Wiki, is the terrific painting of him, showing off the same insignia.
Well, No, it's really, seriously better than that! He was a cadet member of the ruling, royal Valois dynasty in France. (Itself founded by a cadet of the preceding Capetian dynasty.) He was That Close. You might have been speed reading, but not That fast. ...Meanwhile, it took me Wiki-ing him to find out that much.
..that trait was considered unsightly by most...but in the days before genetic testing...i would consider it a sure-fire way to tell...
