Not sure how to call this. Is it environmental?, is it an acid wash?, missing clad layer(probably not, don't think it is possible for this year), or what. If you look close at the MM, it appears that the "D" is very close to the date and at an angle. Waht do you guys think?

I think it got run over by a truck.

It cannot be a missing clad layer. A clad coin has one metal sandwiched between layers of another metal. (See modern clad dimes, quarters and halves.) Lincoln Cents before 1982 (and midway through 1982) were the same metal throughout. Lincoln Cents since mid-1982 are made of zinc that is plated with a thin layer of copper. I would not classify modern Lincoln Cents as clad.

I think it may have been heated, like maybe in an oven. Even a better guess is that it was placed in a kiln. that's my story and I'm sticking to it!! :loud:

It could be a strike thru. I do see a very defined edge so the acid thing would seem a little far but if some one was careful who knows. Ice

That is a very interesting obverse. I was thinking heat or something, but the reverse is fine. The nose shows doubling as well. I wondering what some of the error experts say...

Really it looks has if it has been hammered a bit, maybe by little people with little hammers.

Imo it looks like a a very strong struck thru, but struck thru what I don't know, possibly a lot of grease. Interesting coin though, I would like to see what everyone else thinks too.

It almost has a doubling effect around the nose area.

It appears to be a strike through ( grease, gunk, etc.) of a 1961 D ( could be wrongon the last digit). Tilted mint marks and others are very very common for that date.

I agree with the possibility of a strike thru because the reverse is nearly perfect - most likely, a lot of grease got stuck in the dies causing the strike to be very blurred and mushy. Very interesting.

    Hi All,

It looks like a very late stage, capped die strike with perhaps some debris or grease between the die cap and the coin being struck.

    Thanks,
    Bill
