Well - I can't tell you WHY you did it - only you know that. But I can tell you that hanging a coin in the bathroom is not a good idea. All the humidity and temperature changes have caused the coin to tone. If you don't like the toning - about all you can do is dip the coin to remove the toning - or take the coin to a dealer's shop, sell it and get a new one to replace it. Considering the prices I have been seeing for so-called "toned" coins, you have probably quadrupled the value of your Eagle.
Check out some of the Franklin's at Heritage with "...beautiful amber-colored toning." Looks like plain old corrosion to me. I really have my doubts about how those silver coins could get rainbow colors naturally, without heat being applied.
They can - and they do. It's really quite logical if you think about how the process works. It happens every day in nature.
If you are talking about LawDog's avatar, I think that LawDog would like that one too. IIRC, it sold for a few thousand dollars! It is STUNNINGLY beautiful, though.
Cornish, To answer your original question... You did it in the pursuit of knowledge. Thomas Edison tried about 10,000 substances before he found the right filament for the light bulb. You are a toning pioneer. It is impossible to know exactly what will happen unless you try. A mistake is just a new way of doing things that might have turned out to be an improvement. This particular experiment didn't work, which adds to the sum total of numismatic knowledge. Anyway, that's how I see it unless you say otherwise.
I know that If you put a proof in a flip on a humid day and seal the flip it will begin to tone. The problem is the smooth or polished surfaces can pit if the toning is too rapid. I found this out the hard way. I never seal my flips now. Lost 20 MS68-70 proofs. Rookie mistake!
