I went to another coin auction tonight and look what I got a 1909 S Lincoln Wheat penny. It's graded XF40 by Dominion Grading Service it states lightly cleaned, I don't know much about this company but on google it looks like an up and coming grading company. It was a little pricey but I just had to have it!! I also picked up a 1878 and 1880 S Morgans and some very nice BU and AU Canada $1 coins 1964, 65, 66, 67 and six more one is a 2006 Proof wolf .9999, all silver and some are very nicely toned, will add more pictures later if you'd like.
Very nnice 09S. I wish j was still buying these. Is it woodgrained or is that a reflection. You paid a little higher price because IMO the coin looks Au.
Hello snaz Yes it's a woodgrained and I should have taken a picture of the REV, full wheats nice coin. Thanks itsallngoodtime Bob
I personally would much rather have a lower graded problem free coin, but if you like it that is what matters!! Always loved the 1909-S vs. the 1909-S VDB as I think you can get a lot more bang for your buck
I have them too, but I do like to add all kinds of 1909 S wheats to my collection even errors. Isn't that part of the fun of collecting them? Thanks itsallngoodtime Bob
Nice woody, I have 5 1909-s between ms63-65, none of them are woody though. It's much scarcer than the 1909-s vdb, too bad not as much demand on these. On key dates I also prefer problem coins with better details rather than problem free coins though at similar price levels. Illini420, you have awesome sets, very impressive!
"I personally would much rather have a lower graded problem free coin, but if you like it that is what matters!!" You are kind with your words. I would say don't ever buy a coin such as this that is not in a PCGS, NGC or ANACS holder unless you are an expert in the series. The photo is fuzzy, but I doubt that it is a true XF and would be concerned about authenticity in a Dominion (who??) holder.
DGS is a respectable grading company and have heard very little "bad" about them in my research. They don't have the market share that PCGS and NGC have right now so they aren't as well known. I am willing to bet that the coin makes the XF grade, but I agree that I would not have purchased it with such a fuzzy photo.
I love the woodgrain effect. Dominion grading formerly PCI bought by David Lawrence a couple years ago. They have quality graders and from what I can tell do a pretty good job. Unfortunately because of the PCGS/NGC dominance they get stuck grading mostly problem coins.
You know I collect alot of coins Raw and graded and we all know that PCGS, NGC or ANACS are some of the best, but now that I looked into DGS it looks pretty good. If all of us would keep an open mind and wait and see how some of these new grading companies do!!! maybe they would have a chance to grow in the open market place after all this country was built on small business. I know for a fact that some people who get there coins graded by PCGS, NGC or ANACS and aren't happy with the grade they recieve will break it open and send it back and get differant grade so how does that make them the ones to trust anymore then the next guy and PCGS no longer body bags coins, there's one thats changing its ways plus there very pricey on top of that. DGS is a ligit company, and they are doing very well with David Lawrence and they have quality graders. So how about giving the other guys a chance!! Thanks itsallngoodtime Bob
I really don't feel it is appropriate to assume the coin is a lower grade because it isn't in a top 3 slab. The coin LOOKS like an AU coin, regardless what the slab says for the grade or the company.
I cannot even attempt a grade on that pic...all I see is some cheek seperation. BUT, knowing DGS, I will guess it is better than it appears. Woodys, especially in the 09 year are very popular coins. Congrats on a nice one. ( I am guessing...pics folks ) I have recently seen a very nice well matched set of " woodys"...... the 09; 09VDB, 09S and the 09SVDB.......with any luck I will be offering it soon.
With the experts that Dominion has I would trust their grading skills with my own coins. With Rick Snow grading the Indian Head Cents I feel quite confident that I'd get an accurate grade on any IHC or other copper that I submitted to them. This is a new company with many experts working there. I would feel as comfortable buying any DGS slabbed coin as I would a PCGS or an NGC or ANACS slabbed coin. The only difficulty now is: are these coins going to get the same money as PCGS graded coins? Within the top graders, even their prices aren't the same. As always, it depends on the qualities of the coin you are interested in and the TPG is only an opinion to take into consideration, if you like. Bruce
I tried to get a better picture of my 1909 S Wheat I took another picture of my 1909 S Lincoln (Woody) Wheat Penny and hope this helps and hopefully its not to fuzzy for you. By the way the dark spot by his mouth is on the case not the coin. Thanks itsallngoodtime Bob
With a quick look at the coin, it looks real fuzzy. However, looking at all the details, the photo is actually quite sharp and it is only the graining that is fuzzy. That is a solid XF. In fact, I would call it a 45.
