Today i had to do something i swore i would never do, but i had to. My wife needed medicine and our soc. sec. checks do not come till next week. so I had to grab a few of my extra coins and go to our local pawn shop/ coin dealer. I was on the defensive before i went in and made sure to tell him I would be back in 9 days to get my treasures back + the 20% interest charge. I was ready to get screwed beyond the interest charge but he explained that he would give me 80% of book value. I know that depends on what book you look at but I had done a lot of research and found him not to be far off.
These were duplicates that i had gotten on ebay either because they were cheap or I got caught bidding in two auctions for the same thing. I took the money and told him to put my coins in a safe place and I would be back to get them. While I was there I looked around and saw all of the coins that people have to part with just to make ends meet and it made me sad.
While I was there I saw 4 people come in and part with coins that they will never come back for. For a brief moment I considered trying to pawn wife and keep coins but was brought back to reality by her shrill voice telling me to take the money so we could go.
I told her upon our departure that I will be back in 9 days to get my babies and that maybe next time it might be her instead of the coins!! Though I do not believe i could get 80% of market for her, or could I?:hatch:

It's a shame you had to do that, but at least you did what you had to do and can most likely get them back.

It's too bad you had to do it, but at least you had options. Some people don't.

I have also noticed my local pawn/dealer has many more coins these days than ever before, but his prices are higher than I want to pay.

You know even though they are coins that are duplicates of others that i have, it was still like losing a member of my family and I am not happy about it. My wife says the fact that I got more out of pawning them than I paid for them should be some solice, has led to me to :rolling:giving her the silent treatment since we got home!!!

^LOL. I am surprised to see you got reasonable $$ at the pawn shop, good for you! Around me they rip on both ends. Asking how much they wanted for a small baggie of junk dimes, they acted insulted. (and pretended not to know the term "junk"). I think they wanted like $3.50 each for culls.

That's funny, my wife even liked and "understood" it.
