Noob here. Just came across this oddity. What do you figure it is worth? Be sure you read the description to see what I mean.
So, this guy is selling a photo of a 40-d quarter. If you are searching for a 40-d quarter, guess what you run across? Seems disingenuous to me.
He styles these Ebay listings as "Commodities Auctions" he says... "Commodities is a collaborative project between me and spirited bidders. Art pieces are created based on specific marketable goods and cater to niche audiences of collectors and enthusiasts. The works are then exhibited on the auction website, eBay, under search terms that coincide with the vernacular from which each piece derives. Potential buyers may experience the thrill of shopping and the excitement of competition by vying against one another to win the art piece. The culminating action occurs at the close of each auction once rival bidders complete each piece by determining its value." Check out the "artist's" Flickr... http://www.flickr.com/photos/12173614@N08/ (he even has a drawing of Britney Spears "shaved off hair") *yikes*
And this artist Erik Dalzen has a blog, discussing his ebay project, and a couple of people who actually expected to receive what was pictured. http://thecommodities.blogspot.com/ He "reminds" every bidder right away that they are bidding on a photograph. Not too sure what he is doing, but he appears to be be pretty honest.
Read the auction again. The item sold is not a silver quarter - it's only a partially out of focus photo of one. IMHO, including S/H the buyer only overpaid by $11.50. Want your very own? Download, enlarge and print the auction picture.
I guess anybody can take a photo of your coins, print it, signed it and sell it on ebay as limited edition art.
