According to the latest Coin World (August 10,2009), The US Mint has produced more 2009-D Jefferson Nickels. They have stated that they minted an additional 7.4 Million 5 cent coins and may continue minting them, but have only resumed production at Denver at this time. Dime and nickel production may not have ended for this year as previoously thought.
I missed it the first time. If the report is true it will mean a LOT of people have overpaid for '09-D nickels they bought when they thought production for the year was finished. I'm glad I didn't get caught up in the hoopla.
well, truthfully, an additional 7.4 million coins takes a 24M mintage and makes it a 31M mintage. Relatively, the number hasn't changed very much but I think it shows that they could become common as dirt almost overnight and without us knowing until after they are minted. As for a 31M mintage still being scarce... was the 24M mintage scarce???
Still, millions of coins is a lot and eventually UNC rolls will appear. I'd rather spend the premium on classic coins with real rarity and search the Jeff rolls in the future when they surface.
eventually dan, yes. Even the "rare" silver dollars of the early 1900s eventually came to light when the government cleared out the stockpiles in the 1960s. I just hope we don't have to wait that long.
There have been ZERO 09 D nickels or dimes in circulation found or on Ebay that I know about. I'm still trying to be the first so that I can get back in the business of selling current year coins at a huge profit.
that was kind of my point, bob. The ones they minted are coins that haven't been seen at all and may not go into circulation either. I keep hoping to find about 50 rolls myself. I promise I'd share.
