Howdy, new guy here. I pulled a handful of coins out of my pocket that I got in change yesterday and I found something a bit out of the ordinary. It's a U.S. nickel from 1906. I was wondering if it's worth anything. It's worn pretty smooth, but I was surprised that it was still floating around after 103 years. Anyway, I was just curious about it. Here are both sides...
Bad economy is forcing some collectors to use their coins. I've gotten some oldies and proofs in my till at work.
In all of my years of collecting I've never found a liberty Nickel in the change. Good for you old sod...:smile
It's not worth a whole lot - maybe a couple of bucks - but it is a GREAT circulation find. It's not every day that you find a 100+-year-old coin in change.
I received a 1940 dime and a 1917 wheat cent in change during the last few months. These are among my favorite coins. Something about finding these in circulation. Maybe it is a flash back to my youth when this is the only way I collected. Nice find....
Mike, think of it like you just found a needle in a haystack. Needles aren't worth much, but that's not the point. The point is, with that karma going...well, let me put it this way, I'd be at the racetrack right now!
Redbook has it at 2 bucks, but good luck getting that. I have an abundance of these and they do not sell well (G-4)....I've tried. You might get a buck, probably a bit less. JMHO.
Still worth holding on to. I asked this same question to a guy on E-Bay about a worn down 1917 penny, and he told me he usually tosses these kind of coins back in rolls. I had just started collecting and knew it was not worth much, but I thought to myself,"How may of these am I going to find?". So, the way I look at it, is even if it is worned, look at the date and think the same thing. I would keep it, even if you could barely read the date. That is just me though. A couple bucks now, could mean more than that 20 years from now. Good find!:thumb:
I agree. It's a sweet circulation find but it's not worth much. But, certainly something to hang on to!
Well, that kind of luck has managed to escape me so far. Finding an old coin is about the extent of it for me.
Awww, nice treasure. Not worth much, but think of its history. Maybe in the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. Never know. Traci
wow neat find....i got a 1901 like that once...a friend called me when i lived in vegas and said she had it in her tray on her blackjack game...so i came and bought it for fifty cents
