you have no idea how short my memory is getting, Doug... I find the piece as I do many things about you... curious. You and I definitely take a different tack in our individual ways of thinking. I am not saying that's bad, it can make for fabulous collaboration to have minds come together from such different places on the same subjects.
Rim damaged 1927-P Peace Dollar. Amazing the number of people that ask me what is it when they see it.
I don't carry one, but I think I'm going to start. I plan to implement the tip I read on a thread here about carrying around a cleaned coin for awhile. Yeah, I'll lose a technical grade or two, but the cleaned part will soon be gone. I've got a barber dime and a half cent I want to try this with.
By the way, here's the ultimate pocket piece: From the San Francisco Chronicle: "John Feigenbaum flew out of San Jose this week in first class with flip-flops on his feet, a T-shirt on his back and a dime worth $1.9 million in his pocket. It was the most expensive dime ever to pass through San Jose. That's because it is the most expensive dime in the history of dimes. 'All the way across the country, I didn't sleep,'' Feigenbaum said. "I didn't eat, and I didn't sleep. You wouldn't, either.' Feigenbaum is a rare-coin dealer, and the dime he was carrying across the country, from San Jose to New York, is an 1894-S dime, one of only nine known to exist and one of only 24 known to be coined that year in San Francisco." Ok true story ...when I first started my job back in 1999 an email went out at work one day for a volunteer to fly to NY to deliver a package. It was slow, so I volunteered. I was given an 8.5x11 plain brown envelope and told to leave for the airport and take the next flight to Laguardia. So I did, had an open ticket jumped on the US air shuttle from DC. 50 minutes later I land in NY ..no baggage so I walk out past the luggage area and there is a guy in a black suit with a sign with my name on it. I jump into a dial car (sedan) and head downtown to the World Trade Center. I get out, deliver the envelope. The man opens it, signs a letter and gives it to me as proof of delivery. I asked what was in the envelope and he said a 1.2 million dollar promisory note that was "live". So, after I p'd my pants, I jumped back into the dial car, went back to the airport and caught the next shuttle home to DC. In the airport, I bought a green plastic statue of liberty figure which sits on my desk to this very day.
I carry a 1921 AU Morgan in an air-tite, in a back pocket of my wallet. It was very black and hard to see. Not stored properly over all the years. I gave it an acetone dip and made it a little brighter. It was one of four my grandfather had saved at some point in his life. I wish I could have asked him where he got them. Carrying a silver dollar is supposed to be good luck and it's neat to take it out sometimes to look at when I'm stuck somewhere and bored.
Ahhh 1.2 mil , good thing they didn't tell you what it was, I would have been paranoid the whole trip. Great story Andrew!
I carry a 1945 Walker that I found in the yard of the house my wife and I bought when we first got married. I was trimming the hedge that lined the fence and saw a glint of silver on ground and dug it out. Right near it was a 1920 Lincoln cent, very worn. After removing the dirt, I've carried it ever since. I also carry a challenge coin (the one as my avatar) for the training sqaudron I work for.
I carry a challenge coin also. The obverse is St. Florian (patron saint of firefighters) the reverse is the NRA seal. It was a Gem BU when I first put it in my pocket and has now mellowed to a nice bronze. I have never lost it. I have found it banging around the dryer when I left it in a pant's pocket when I did laundry, but technicaly I never lost it. Makes a great conversation piece.
New pocket piece (technically, a wallet piece, since it's stored in the back of my wallet) is a 2009-D half dollar, one of the leftovers from rolls I bought from the Mint. I only save one of each date/mintmark and the rest spend or find people to give them away to. But I always like to save one extra! For the longest time a pocket piece I had was a 1971-S half dollar I found in circulation, until I realized it was a mishandled proof and stored it away more safely before it could acquire any more wear. Would guess it's about a Proof-55 in condition.
I Use barber halfs as card holders in my local casino when I play cards. If It brings good luck then I always but a 50 dollar bet on black at the rullet table on the way out. Usualy as the sun is comming up. If I hit then I tip the "dealer" (dude that spins the wheel) with the half. Most of the time they get realy excited. Its kinda lame but a funny tip none the less. Also like wesly snipe said "always be on black". Also Black 11 is a particurlay lucky number ive seen my frinds when thousands of dollars when it hits. It could just be thats the number we all play but hay 35 to 1 (I know riged right?) is a sweet cash!
Interesting post, I never leave my house without a penny in my pocket. Been doing it since I was a kid. Always a different penny, or 2 or 3 pennys, a little coinfusing maybe. Sometimes will drop a lucky penny so maybe someone will find and have a great day knowing they have found that lucky penny.
I just started carrying a 1971 Ike dollar....It got some green scuzz on the obverse and I am hoping it will wear off. No such luck, as yet, but I only started carrying around in November or December. I also carry a $2 bill in my wallet. Mostly for convorsation. I try to talk my friends into keeping their eyes open for me and it seems to grab their attention more if you have something they don't usually see to show you
Pocket piece ? Sure. It's my avatar. It is either : a genuine 1793 Wreath cent MS65 RD, or a replica, passed around at EAC, in lieu of business cards You decide !
