What did turning this into jewelry do to the value of the coin? Can it be salvaged? Thank you.

What does the rim look like ? It's still a 1904 Twenty dollar Gold Piece ,No ?

I've never submitted a coin that was removed from a jewelry mount, but the two times that I submitted a medal that was removed from a jewelry mount, they came back as ungradable.

It’s worth its weight in gold. Less the bezel x .900 fineness
As Chris said, probably won’t grade
Possible the bezel is gold or maybe someone would want the piece as jewelry, as is

If it can be removed from the mount and doesn't look like it was mounted and damaged it may be gradeable. If it's damaged, it's damaged.
This is what the comment "what does the rim look like?" Means.

hey CoinJockey73, this coin has one big thing going against it from the start. it had/has a chain mounted to it. i really don't think any grader would give it a grade because of that. sorry man, on to #1....good luck man

Lovely double eagle. Sadly, since it is in a bezel, the coin will forever be a damaged coin. Still is a lovely example, but will be relegated to a jewelry piece for the remainder of its life. I wouldn't remove the bezel. It will expose the damage.

It wouldn't take much for a gold coin to show marks from the holder. The two bronze medals I mentioned in my earlier post hardly show anything, but when I got them back from NGC and had a chance to inspect the rim carefully with my loupe, I could see it.
