I got a 1913 D out of a roll today and I'll post the pic when I get back from work man I love answering a phone that doesn't ring and being able to open up 20-30 rolls go to lunch then open another 20-30 rolls and get paid full time hours best job for a coin searcher to have I think
Your coin is about F-12. Always take your pictures straight over the coin. Only use angled shots as extras to show some details that the over-head shots may have not shown.
the 1st picture is a a few more pics i did and i cut them out of the pics and blew them up to see better the bands above the wheatheads are all visible just worn here and there but NOT worn out they almost look smushed a bit and the other pic next to them is of lincoln's head and I uploaded the 2nd pic and drew on it where there is almost no details for hair except in the 2 small circles marked with a d
so what grade is my coin here? and do you need other pictures to have a better chance at grading it? also can you please state why you grade it the grade you give it? thanks for all you help in teaching me
Alex- I think everyone was clear you coin is between a Fine 15-20. The wear on the cheek, ear, hair, face make that clear. At that grade it's not a supervalueable coin, maybe worth $5 or so.
o ok I didn't see where anyone stated anything "clear" about this coin I just saw one guy say 15-20 another say f-12 and other posts stating the pics aren't that great.... what else did I miss? as far as the value I sure would like to know that but I want to know more about why it grades at 15/20 or f-12 I'm trying to use this and other posts I have made and will make in the future to learn more about grading as the coin shop in town is run by a greedy grumping old fart wanting $20 to look at a coin for a minute or 2 and then say it grades at "???" reasonns why it grades that way but it seems the only reason he says anything is just to screw with me and to get his hands on my folded money and posting here seems more constructive and way less costly to learn and that's only if the coin shop owner here is even speaking the truth to me one thing he told me was why a ms 69 graded coin I got that didn't get ms 70 is cause lincoln isn't smiling enough... I think that's clearly BS and he had the gall to get ticked when I didn't pay him $20 that was the 1st I went in to let him see my coins and and last time to see that d-bag he's 80 something now so hopefully a reasonable dealer will buy him out soon or their will be an estate auction
I am pretty sure I see the remnants of a hair line and some separation of the jaw and cheek. I would guess it would make a 20. Bear in mind, grading is not an exact science and there is more than one standard to grade by (NGC, PCGS, ANA, etc.).
Alex, next to studying various grades of coins to learn how to grade, I suggest you read some grading books, and my preference and one I recommend to all my customers is "Making the Grade" put out by CoinValues/CoinWorld. It has excellent photos and indicates the high points in most U.S. coin series. It's very easy to use, concise, and will be of tremendous help to all coin collectors.
